It is safe to say that we have a great interest in color, pattern and texture. We actually get excited to see what colors next month's Muni passes are, and love mixing and matching patterns wherever possible. It's easy to see, then, why we love this Portland based design studio...
Pattern People is a two-woman "surface design studio" that creates prints for fashion, products, and interiors. The bold patterns are not for the faint of heart or anyone looking to stay minimalist with line, form, and color. The image above reminds us of the cover of The Beatles' Revolver album, with a hint of imagery from the Peter Max / Yellow Submarine years...
Their work has been manifested in murals like the one seen here in Portland Spaces Magazine, as well in artwork like the pieces above the jump. Claudia Brown and Jessie Whipple Vickery, the women behind Pattern People, recently curated a show, "Beneath the Surface" at Nemo Design in Portland. We love the design coming from this studio, as well as their blog highlighting trends in fashion and home design.

Wowzers! These are great! I'd give my left thumbnail for one of those chairs in the top picture, and that mural is absolutely fan-freaking-tastic.

The mural on the far wall in pic 3 reminds me of the doodles we used to do in school....just following lines and creating new patterns. If I had just the right paint pen....I might be inspired to do something funky on a random wall.
The top one hurts my eyes. But it does remind me of those books we had as kids where you have to stare at the pattern to see a 3d picture.
Hi! It's Claudia from Pattern People. I'm so excited to see this post and it's very interesting to see your comments. The bathroom project was done on commission, so there were a few small constraints, such as color. At at the same time, the client and interior designer (Andee of Osmose) liked what we did right away. Our first round was our natural doodly obsessive drawing style, and it seemed to work for everyone. After that, it was great to develop that into something even more obsessive and ornate. We worked with a mural painter, Brent Wick, and he eventually got it all painted onto the wall, he was amazing!
The rest of the space is also very cool. The client has very eclectic and adventurous taste, and the interior designer is really talented. It's in the current issue of Portland Spaces.
