We find that stairs are often overlooked, even in otherwise well designed homes. That's why we love these patterned stair risers - the project turns the stairs from a passage-way into a centerpiece. The best part? It's a relatively easy DIY project.

Melissa of Sugar City Journal hid photos of her family in the damask pattern, a small touch that takes this project from purely decorative to a unique alternative to the family photo-lined stairwell.
See Melissa's instructions on how to create your own patterned stair risers here.

Wow, this looks fantastic! Love the idea of the family photos too, subtle and fun.
so awesome. now i wish i had stairs!
Cute!
We live in an old house in New Orleans and our stair treads are so short that everyone is constantly scuffing the risers up through no fault of their own. I toyed with painting the risers black (out of sheer desperation) but why not have a beautiful solution?
I wish I had stairs too!!!!
OK, is anyone willing to go along with me on a brainstorm? I do have porch stairs... How could I do something similar - and easy - in an all-weather kind of way?
This is a great idea. I think I'm going to do this to my stairs. I just have a quick question - would it be easy to remove when I move out? I'm a renter so I wouldn't want to destroy the varnish of the wood. I'm also not a crafty person so I don't know the adhesive qualities of ModPodge.
Love the stairs. LOVE the painting on the wall. Care to share the artist's name? It's great!
the stairs are so authentic! would love to know what your interior design style is...www.mystyle.com/dressmynest
Ohhh, I really really love this idea!
grtdrg: I am pretty sure that ModPodge is permanent, I have crappy plywood risers going into by basement so I really don't care about the wood, but if you have real wood stairs plus you're a renter then I wouldn't recommend this project.
I have 3 stairs in my apartment that lead to my terrace. They would look so sweet with a splash of color. I'm glad I happened upon this! :)
