Felt rugs! Felt rugs! We're smitten. We recently stopped in Peace Industry in Hayes Valley and absolutely fell in love with the rugs they peddle. Peace Industry is an airy shop filled with rugs, all designed and made by Melina and Dodd Raissnia. They also have their own workshop in Iran where they have perfected the best methods for producing the highest quality felt rugs, all of which are designed by Melina. The method is a revitalization of the oldest rug tradition from Iran that had been on the verge of extinction. The rugs are 100% wool and are naturally dyed (and gorgeous!).

All of the wools are naturally dyed and there are a variety of different colors to choose from if you want to customize your own.
At Peace Industry, no felt is left untouched. Melina uses the remnants from the rugs she makes to create all sorts of different baskets and containers. The ones you see on the bench were $95 and the ones on the shelf ranged between $65 and $130, depending on size.

I ordered one of these for a client, with customized colors and size, and it is fantastic!
I was so excited until I heard it was in Hayes valley- now Iknow that I won't be able to afford one :O(
testing.
I got one of their rugs as a birthday/anniversary present a few years ago, and we love it. It's our primary rug in the living room, and sees a lot of traffic. We have an active young boy (now 7), and the thickness is perfect for when he's playing -- an inch of felt is a good pad for jumping off the couch. It cleans easily, but don't vacuum, because it pulls up the fiber. I just sweep it with a broom once a week, and it's perfect. I LOVE this rug, and think it was a very good value.
