We fear we've come a little late to the party here, but we've recently discovered an entire Peep diorama subculture. Yes, Peeps, the yellow and pink marshmallowy Easter candy. We've talked about decorating with them and plopping them into hot cocoa, but evidently they can also be the stars of some very intricate dioramas that Peep lovers enter into competitions around the country this time of year.

We can only assume that people come up with all these creative uses because nobody actually wants to eat them. But the dioramas sure make nice eye candy. You can click the links below to see photos of contestants' entries, and some are open for online voting.

The Ohio Historical Society held an Ohio history themed contest, the deadline was April 4th, winners announced April 18th. Here's an entry that was picked up by the local news! http://projects.springfieldnewssun.com/cache/galleries/Living/General%20Living/033011peepqua/
I'm from DC and look forward to the Washington Post Peep contest every spring...this is still one of my all-time favorites (first pic): Project Peepway. I couldn't find the original Washington Post article but fortunately plenty of bloggers posted about it!
There's one in Milwaukee Sunday the 17th at the Bay View Brew Haus!
There's one in St. Paul and Minneapolis that the Pioneer Press has been putting on for YEARS.

Loving Flora, Fauna and Merriweather!
My extended family has done its own peep diorama contest every year for the past 7 years or so. While we're not quite as elaborate as the big contests, everyone has a lot of fun. Each year we pick a theme: movies, history, art, music, states, TV and books so far. Hint: stale peeps are easier to work with!
Adorable!
