Oh kitchen lighting. So many choices. Here are some go-to online lighting resources within a range of prices. I love love love the ceramic lamp cluster by Matt Gagnon — it's the kind of lighting that inspires the design of an entire room. The Anta Drop pendant is the sleekest rendition of the trendy bare bulb I have seen. And we can't forget places like IKEA and West Elm, because they're just so dang affordable.

There's plenty of great hanging options out there, but I've had a hard time finding a nice flush mount kitchen light. Not semi flush. Flush.
We have 8' ceilings and even a semi-flush light hangs down too far... it would be just inches above my tall dad's head.
PS, we cannot do recessed lights, as the ceiling is solid concrete.
sagekitten85: there are some sweet ceiling mount lights here:

not sure if they are small enough, but you can mix and match shades.
a lot of the sites mentioned above have extensive collections of flush mount lighting! check them out!
There MUST be a hack for that Workstead lamp - definitely a way to DIY it for less than $1375!
Any thoughts?
Workstead definitely hackable. They look like parts from a chemistry lab, when working with bunsen burner, etc. Rods or tubes connector pieces...
sagekitten85 -
why don't you try lowering your wall cabinets and placing recessed cove lighting on top of them and let the light bounce off the ceiling (you could also paint the ceiling bright white to enhance the light as well)? It should give you the light you want plus create an illusion of more height.
sagekitten85, why not go for a "boob" light, or a sleeker contemporary version of such? They are flush mount and only come down about 5-6 inches. You'll be surprised what they have at Lowes. Such as this:

Most of those (save the IKEA & West Elm ones) seem *awfully* expensive. There are lots of beautiful, very reasonable lights out there.
i don't know about the coconut lamp in a kitchen. With potential food splatter, dust, etc. it seems hard to clean.
I dont really like any of these. Kinda stale.
On the Workstead DIY idea:
You would need the lamps, a few metal pipes, and a couple of these pipe clamps:

The do remind me of bunsen burner stands. That would make a great task light.
Seeing the collection you put together, I think you meant to include the Vavä IKEA lamp:

I plan to put two in my "beach house modern" kitchen because they look like sea urchins to me!
Also, the Knappa, is still very relevant, washable, and cheap!
