This look is just so elegant, and practical too. Hanging the bedside light frees up a ton of room on the night table, where space for water, reading material, alarm clock and so on is at a premium.
We've seen chandeliers hanging at the bedside (check out this great post for more); drum shades and glass pendants are less common, but the effect is equally lovely. A pair of drum shades has a sleek, modern look, and glass pendants (like my beloved Yellena James series!!) give off soft, clean light... perfect for nighttime reading.
What do you think of hanging bedside lamps? Is this a look you could get behind (or fall asleep beneath)?

that mannequin in #2 is extremely creepy. imagine waking next to that..... nuts.
My first apartments I used a pair of rice paper lanterns hung on either side of the bed as bedside lamps - It was a great effect made even better by hanging a fabric panel from the ceiling as a headboard which hid the cords.
Any ideas about where the bed in picture 1 is from?
I plan on installing wall-mounted lights on either side of the bed when I renovate my bedroom. Right now I have lamps, but they're mismatched and inadequate light-wise.
I love the bird headboard!
I love the rug in picture 6!! Please post any information about this. Thank you.
Love the hanging bedside lamps. It just makes sense. I think it could work in a living room too, with the lamps over end tables. Especially if the tables are in the center of the room, away from the walls; completely avoids cord issues if you run them on ceiling tracks.
Pardon my ignorance but what is a ceiling track? I hate exposed cords, so other than having the ceiling opened up and an electrician re wiring I have not found a solution for this treatment in an existing bedroom.
Ditto on the bird, headboard, love it. yves2013, I have a dress form in the hallway outside of my bedroom and have a jemped a mile more than once, passing it in the hallway at night!
Hanging fixtures look nice as long as the switch is nearby. Who wants to crawl out of the cozy covers after you're done reading?
jemped=jumped
I have a hanging lamp on my side of the bed. It's fantastic. I wish I could find another for the other side, but it's vintage and I haven't yet. But I keep trying.
I like the idea..looks sooo romantic but agree the switch needs to be by the bed.
Last pic: "Amateur Boxing Every Friday Nite" - I'd love to have a sign like that above my bed!
They make wireless outlet switches. You plug the pendant lamp into one of those and use a remote to control your lighting. Kits come for as many as three outlets, so you can control different areas from your bed.
This is the second house I've had where the living room is not wired for any overhead lights.
Beautiful bedrooms. I agree with gingergirl that it is very romantic. I like the one by Coco and Kelly.
Here is another one that I adore:

The birds on the headboard would definitely give me nightmares!

I have hanging lamps by my bed, too. They're a style feature, and also save room on my book-laden night stands.
Cost Plus World Markets have great lanterns and hanging pendants. This is what I have in my room: http://www.worldmarket.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3606192
Yeah whatever with the hanging lamps, this should be a post about headboards! There are some great ones here! And count me in as another one lovin' the birds.
You know, I thought that I would love this idea, but after I flipped through the pictures, I wasn't as crazy about it as I thought.
I think it is a nice idea if the shades and cords are simple and minimalist, like in pictures 4 or 7. Maybe even picture 5. That being said, I think a lot of the pictures with the more ornate lights make the space look very cluttered. With the nightstand, all of the junk that perpetually lives on a nightstand (well, at least my nightstand) AND a cord dangling from the ceiling with fancy light hanging from it. That's too much clutter in the space I use to unwind and fall asleep.
Robinette: Thank you!
I LOVE the mannaquin!! I have one myself, Mannaquinna is her name, and she is a great addition to my home decor. She gives the place color and makes you say "huh?"
the headboard with the birds has to be the coolest bed i have EVER seen! wow!! what a find!
I love, love, love the long pendant lamps in image #2... anyone know where they are from?
I love the lamps in #2! Very nice indeed.
