Q: I am looking for the perfect living room color that will fit my mood for all seasons. Our sofa is ivory white. There is lots of light in the room (larger photo below) and the trim, built-in bookshelf and the fireplace across from the sofa is white. We will be using a natural colored jute rug on the floor so our options are pretty endless.

Z2 iPod Dock and Wi...
Sico Gray Drizzle. It is a soft, warm, luminous gray.
you could try an aqua blue. it can feel beachy in the summer or has a nice cool, crisp feeling in the winter.
I just painted my office a great neutral color that I can change up with different pillows, window treatments, accessories, etc. It is a discontinued color, but Sherwin Williams still can look up the code. It was a Martha Stewart paint from years ago called "Tortilla."
dunn edwards
starstruck for a bold blue
verde for a soft warm green
icon red to excite all your senses
Benjamin Moore Healing Aloe. It's a blue-green with a touch of grey. It's never depressing, but also not annoyingly bright. Looks great with white or cream trim.
Restoration Hardware's Sycamore Green mixed by Benjamin Moore (they have the formula, but bring in the color swatch) is a beautiful gray green that looks nice with white trim and changes color in different light. Also, Benjamin Moore's Silver Fox, which is recommended often on AT.
Light grey. White, ivory, natural jute, and grey are a fantabulous neutral palette that will afford you the flexibility to change out punches of color with the seasons by simply adapting your accessories. Feeling spring coming on? add some punches of plum and fuschia and a little daffodil yellow with some pillows, a throw, a bowl on the coffee table. Come autumn, just swap it out for some browns and bronze and maybe some charcoal grey.
I *wish* I could start my space over again because that's where I'd start!
Dunn Edwards December Sky!!!
We just did it in our whole house and it's fabulous.
Their regular paint is low VOC but you can also get in
in Zero VOC.
It's a pale blue based gray that make everything look amazing!
Farrow & Ball's Dead Salmon: awful name, wonderful rosy-taupe color when on the walls. You can get the same color from other paint brands, I just don't know what they call it! Also, their Elephant's breath is a lovely warm grey. I get all my color inspiration from Farrow and Ball's (limited) paint colors, and then buy less expensive paints that match them.
Consider today's post with Gwenyth Paltrow's home as a demo of these wonderful neutrals (and check out the deep magenta wall way in the back of the hallway!)

What do you dislike about the current wall color? Brainstorm for answers, writing each one on paper as you think of it. Weed options with those disliked qualities. Your focus will narrow to options that are attractive to you. Take your time. People may say that it's easy to repaint if you're disappointed, but that hasn't been my experience.
With such neutral pieces, white woodwork & lots of light, there are, as you say, endless options. Somewhere I read that the human eye can distinguish 23 million different colors. I'm not sure about that. I mean, I'm a decorator, and I can see maybe 8 or 9 million colors, max. Of course, that's still a lot of colors.
But asking us to suggest the single "perfect" color that will fit all your moods in all seasons? Well, that seems to be expecting an awful lot out of a can of paint. We don't even know you, let alone all your moods.
The good news, though, is that A) with your givens, no matter what you choose, you can hardly go wrong and B) people can adapt to about anything, so even if it's not, you know, THE ONE "perfect" color, you can probably get used to it.
Magnaverde Rule No. 30: Contentment comes easily to those who set their standards low.
Benjamin Moore's 'Coventry Grey' is great mid-tone grey. It looks great with white trim!
But... with such neutral furniture, it would be more fun to use a great colour. Raspberry, kelly green, robin's egg... What's your favourite colour?
It will depend on the exposure of the natural light but here are some to experiment with that I have used-
Pale blue greys-
BM Cashmere Gray its a pale grey blue and looks great with white trim and honey colored hardwood floors. I live in foggy SF and it lifts my spirits on grey days and sunny days.
SHERWIN-WILLIAMS TOPSAIL SW6217- its neither aqua or grey but very uplifting, nice with crisp whites.
Really nice robin egg blues- listed here

Look at this AP tour- bedroom is a nice blue BM Silver Marlin

greens-
BENJAMIN MOORE SHADES OF SPRING 537- brings outside inside and pairs well, with deep oranges, creams, brown accents
PRATT & LAMBERT MOSS GREEN 16-29- its a soft green has some grey in it easy to work with
Another idea that I think is very chic is super white trim and ceiling with a warmer pale sand off white for the walls, this looks great with a white sofa and then add dark woods, bronze, silvers and just a hit of colors for some saturation
I had this booked marked love the paint color-

Factor in how high your ceilings are, what kind of accessories do you plan to incorporate, how do you want to feel? Cozy might require deeper darker and/or warmer colors...light and breezy go for paler shades...stimulating would be your reds and oranges...calming your blue tones.
I have all white-painted walls, with the condition that color and pattern elsewhere in the interior decor are my choice. My husband and I are content with this compromise. However, I wouldn't have only white walls if it were my decision alone. I can't recommend it unless you especially crave simplicity and low maintenance. I envy your challenging situation a bit. Have fun with it.
My go to combo, Benjamin Moore, Dill Pickle and White Dove for the trim. It always brings a kick to a living room, but because it's green, it is fresh and cozy at the same time.
The way green changes so much depending on the light is interesting.
I'm already sick of gray and it's only just started.
Benjamin Moore - "Balboa Mist" (warm greige) and "Horizon" (Cool gray) are both very pale neutrals that I've used and really love in my home.
Pick a color that makes YOU look and feel good. The sofa can fend for itself.
I have two favorites in my house that look good with EVERYTHING, look perfect in any light and work in every season--Kwal Howell's French Ditch (a perfect light green) and Benjamin Moore's Early Morning Mist (cream with alot of gray in it).
Suggest you read Thom Filicia's Style book, has loads of suggestions on decorating and colours. Loads of tips to inspire you and give direction. Good luck. Good bones lends it's self to awesome design.
An author whose name I don't recall wrote that it's hard to go wrong with walls the color of a manila folder.
See these three great palettes from my favorite, Farrow and Ball. The work is all done for you!

White, cream, ivory. White is never white - there are always subtle patches of colour, depending on what is in the space and where the light comes from at different times of the day. White is the perfect backdrop for a daydream, and to project mental images - in your mind, you can paint and repaint the place in all colours of the rainbow at no cost. I think that is why most artists prefer to live in a white space.
Earl Grey from Lowe's.... we bought it under the American Traditions label, but I think that it's Valspar now. It's chocolaty brown in some light, dark river stone gray in others... always changing. We had it in our living room and LOVED it and always got compliments on it when company came over.
Thank you everyone for all your wonderful ideas! After much consideration, we ended up with Sherwin Williams Antique White and it looks beautiful. Looking forward to adding some color to the bedroom walls in the future!
