We're starting early on our research for a twin bed. Buy something well-built and it will last until college. We think the Perspective twin bed from Room and Board fits the bill.
It's great looking -- substantial and simple hollow squares make up the footboard, headboard and legs. The entire bed frame is made of steel with a natural finish. Like many modern beds, the Perspective only takes a mattress (no box spring necessary).
You'll be glad to know the Perspective also comes in full, queen and king sizes.

I have the Cal King version of this, and I do love the simple look of it (I like Room and Board), and the frame is very sturdy (no mattress bounce or shift) due to the cross slats. It was also so very easy to put together and uses no screws at all.
The frame does make a chilling clanking sound when you tap it.
I have the similar daybed version for my daughter. We've had to pad the headboard after several painful conks. Steel is not the most toddler-friendly material.
