Phil Cuttance's Weld Vase

When you think of the creation of a plastic bottle, machine-made mass production quickly comes to mind. Phil Cuttance's mindfully-produced Weld Vase collection turns this notion on its head— combining everyday plastic with old-world, hand-welding techniques.

Using recycled ABS plastic gathered from the discarded off-cut plastic of a London plastic fabricator, Cuttance handcrafts and individually numbers each welded vase. Working with clean black and white discarded remnants, Cuttance uses complex hot-air welding techniques to bind thin, plastic sheets with strong-quality, beautifully-designed edges. In this way, like pieces handmade of clay or wood, each vase has an individuality not often associated with basic plastic.
