Name: Philip and Claire
Location: Clerkenwell — London, England
We are recently relocated ex-pats living in London. With Phillip's job as a corporate attorney transferring us from sunny Southern California to gloomy London, I sought to find the brightest apartment I could. As an interior designer, I knew that I didn't want a pre-furnished flat as is common in the UK. We landed in London's design friendly neighborhood of Clerkenwell in an old Silk Factory Loft that was re-purposed for residential use in 2000.
This one bedroom flat with large windows, high ceilings, and an open floor plan living area is not your typical Victorian era dwelling. I brought a bright yellow desk for my workspace and colorful art from Jen Bekman's 20x200 for the living room. The bedroom is done in softer tones of grey and white to soften the urban brick backdrop. Keeping the pops of color in the main living spaces also makes the home more lively for company as we are avid entertainers.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Looks like a warm and sweet all American interior. I love the West Elm touches.
So pretty!
Gloomy London? Poor you. Want to switch?
Really warm and cozy. I love the chandelier!
It's sad to think of London as gloomy.
It's sad to think of London as gloomy.
very nice, where is the desk from, I like the colour.
It looks like the West Elm Parsons desk in Polished Turmeric. Bam, google search.
Love! This is pretty much my ideal residence :)
I absolutely love the clean look. I love the minimal but colorful pops of color.
Very clean.
Love it!
I'd take London over SoCal any day especially to live in a space like that...
I want to steal the chandelier stencil idea! Very cool! This place looks fun and functional - my kinda place! :)
Love it! I see West Elm :)
Just lovely! Looks so comfortable and welcoming. The pops of color are perfect.
I've seen that black white chevron rug in a lot of posts. I like it! Does anyone know where i can find it?
Such a beautiful place! I would move to gloomy London just to live in this apartment.
Gloomy London? our temperature has been hitting higher than the middle east! You make it sound like the city is stuck in Dicken's era! The properties arent soley limited to Victorian era!
This looks absolutely delightful! Come decorate my apartment!
this is so beautiful! i love how the simplicity and the clean lines of the furniture really open up the space. i would love to live here.
what a lovely use of space! the colors accent the brick beautifully! you have great taste.
this is fabulous! such a clean and consistent style. i'd love to live in this apartment.
I'm impressed at how well you've adopted the London look with your own Cali flair! Your apartment fits right in! Great space for parties and lovemaking
I find the use of the wall decal quite inspired. The curves of the mock chandelier compliment the structure of the table and chairs and enhance the overall aesthetic of the flat.
For those who commented before, London is beautifully gloomy! Phillip and Claire, your simplistic and intentional style has evoked the charming gloom of our greatest city.
I don't think Claire meant "gloomy london" as an insult. Being a london native and having visited southern california, I understand london is definitely gloomy by comparison. Bugger off!
I like the rug too! Where is it from?
"When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life." Samuel Johnson. When a woman finds London gloomy, she needs to get out and explore!
I'm a California native now living in London and it's fabulous, not gloomy at all! Though from mid-January through the end of February, I must say, the weather can be...challenging. But then I came here from San Francisco, so I know I can hack it.
P.S. This time of year, I really miss Halloween. Guy Fawkes Day's just not cutting it for me.
Why does everyone say Gloomy London? Yes it rains in the UK but in the past 5 years I have been in London many times (from Canada) and the weather was fabulous each time! Your flat is so calm and clean lined with character - really lovely. I wouldn't call it an all American interior at all?? It's very European - much more stylish than anything in the US.
I think the apartment is lovely, and I don't think the focus should be on the weather, per se. I think the idea is how to use a small flat to reflect space and light. Try NYC from Jan - Mar - gray and snow and cold!
Gorgeous apartment in a gorgeous city! Enjoy your time there.
Try West Elm Zig Zag Rug for similar pattern and it's only sale now!Love, love! West Elm!
It's on sale now!
Love the space , so bright and airy and love the splash of colors too ;)
Love the Brits taste too in interior design, so classy and clean! and i'm hooked with Living etc magazines, love the concept where they give some information about the people who live on those spaces.
Spot on
