Is loft living still in? You betcha hard-earned renovation dollars, it is. And what better way to celebrate a completely open space than to create an island of productivity right in the middle of your home. Dutch fashion photographer Fred van't Slot shows us how it's done in this converted work/home studio from an old school building located in the heart of Haarlem.

Of course, to pull off such a comfortable, modern, and inviting look, you'll need some of the elements of a loft. Pricey elements such as: a ridiculously tall ceiling, gigantic windows, and enough room to justify placing a 12 foot desk adjacent to your kitchen island.

We particularly noted the mix-and-match chairs from different eras - the idea may be slightly dated, but it truly makes a warmer and funner workspace overall. The desk is also painted the same color as the kitchen island, creating a flowing surface area. Having great overhead lighting, a couple flowers, and easy access to the espresso maker doesn't hurt either.

What do you think of Fred's giant kitchen island-desk?
