What do you do when you love collecting things, but don't have the space? Collections of items can take up lots of room, both physically and mentally, or they can just mean more dusting on cleaning day! If you're downsizing, here's a great idea for turning a big collection into a single, memorable keepsake.

Whether you're decluttering, selling a collection, or simply packing it away for a while, photographing your collection can be a fantastic way of preserving a fun memory. There are many different approaches that you can take — an overall shot of a beautifully displayed collection as well as individual photos of each piece can be a great way to document a special collection.
For sentimental collections, creating a photo book of your images is a fantastic option. With well-shot photos and a little bit of binding, your collection is set in a format that can be enjoyed over and over again.
Etsy has a great guide to photography for its sellers. The same advice for creating interesting and beautiful photographs for items that are for sale can be applied to your personal belongings! What better way to honor an inherited spoon collection or, say, too many vintage cameras for your own good, like mine above!
Letting go of collections can be hard. But that doesn't mean they have to be forgotten.

I recently gave away my shot glass collection of 35+ glasses from all over the world. I was tempted to do this but realized that after 6 years in storage I didn't even need a photo. Sometimes it's worth it to take the pics and sometimes not.
Then you don't have a collection, you have snapshots. It's not the same. If you're just collecting random junk, sure, but if you're really researching and acquiring the knowledge that goes with collecting, dumping the items in favor of photos is stupid. I collect WWI original posters--am I supposed to throw them away and look at my Flickr links?
Didn't think of it, what a great idea.
I think this is a good idea for some things. It obviously won't work for every collection... but now I have some ideas about how I can make use of some of my mother's collection of porcelain animals that are packed away in my basement!
Great Idea. I have an etsy shop and I love seeing an item sell but I get a little sad knowing it's gone forever. I think this will be perfect and amazing art for my new studio.
The top photos, the lighting is spot on. The bottom photos are too dark. AT, we need an article on how to photograph objects effectively.
