Pillow back sofas have gotten less love lately, with minimalist lines being more in vogue. While I'm not a fan of an overstuffed sofa, I do favor pillow back sofas for two big reasons. They are the most comfortable style for long term sitting. And with both the back and seat cushions being zippered, they are easy to remove and clean, making it easy to keep them looking new for years. You'll love this if you have children, pets, or are kinda messy.
All of the five sofas featured here are loveseats, making them small space friendly for the nursery, bedroom and living room. (Pillow back cushions are also commonly available for full length sofas as well as armchairs.)

I have two vintage loveseats at home that I've been trying to find new cushions for, but every time I search it just comes up with a ton of outdoor cushions -
anyone have a source for indoor cushions like the ones shown above? My next plan is to just make them, but I really thought finding cushions wouldn't be this hard.
They also get all squished and mangled by kids and dogs and husbands, making constant fluffing necessary. I've owned quite a few pillow backs in my day. NEVER AGAIN, thank you.
I have had trouble understanding why real, unattached sofa cushions went out of fashion. I have an Ikea Ektorp sofa and loveseat that work great for us, in a house with a dog, two cats and 3 kids. The covers can be removed, washed, switched out for a different cover. They're super-comfy, and yes, if a cushion gets squashed, it takes 15 seconds to pick it up, shake it and put it back. Much more practical and easy-care (and comfortable) than the one-piece leather sofa we originally bought because we thought it would be kid and pet friendly.
Sorry but those loveseats would still be ruined by my senile old pets. Leather is the best for messes. Of course then you need some throw pillows for extra comfort, and those are always in need of fluffing and washing.
I love this. I have an Ikea sofa also and i've been considering swapping the back cushions for large pillows to give it more of a original/creative look.
Dlancioni: i've seen floor pillows that are about the right size and come in interesting designs.
I agree. My parents got one my first year of university and our fat old cat sitting on top of the back of the couch, always on the same side, ruined the cushion.
We had a slipcovered pillow backed couch for a while. The slipcovers were nice to be able to toss in the wash but the pillow backs drove us both nuts. We would have to smash them back to talk since they were loose and oversized and stuck out when you sat back. Never again. Solid back for me...and next time NO TUFTING.
DovieAnn, I feel the same way. I loathe couches with loose-back pillows. I will never buy another one.
I have a pillow-back sofa now (camel back shape, with one long pillow and two large squares on either side). I will NEVER get one again. Between my husband squishing the middle pillow down to use as an armrest while stretching out on it, and my cats discovering the same pillow works great as a cat bed, the middle pillow is beyond fluffing or punching (seriously - I take that pillow off and beat it to death, and yet the stuffing reverts back to the smushed shape within minutes). It is a heavy stuffing, so I imagine that is one of the issues - feather or light foam wouldn't do this, but the batting/heavy fills will deform over time and defy attempts to re-shape.
If you don't have cats or people that like deforming pillows for comfort, then they would work fine, but the couch back WILL eventually hit the no-return zone and remain in the squashed shape no matter what your efforts... so might want to consider an alternative if this is a possibility.
The Kivik from Ikea is also a pillow back (and seat) and I find it both comfortable and streamlined looking. It's much better to be able to bring the cover to have it cleaned professionally (much cheaper) than to have a professional actually come to your house to clean it, especially with a dog...
You are too funny with that visual!!! :)
We have one of each in different rooms--tight-back, single-cushion sofa and loose-pillow-back sofa. Though the latter is a high-quality, custom Henredon that's in great shape 25 years on and isn't dated (neutral fabric, transitional style), I wouldn't choose that design again, for all the reasons stated by others. They're equally comfortable, but the pillow-plumping drives me nuts and makes the pillow squasher feel somehow to blame for sitting comfortably. Lose-lose.
I thought, Oh, maybe I'm the only one who hates loose-back cushion sofas? Then I open up the comments section and see: Nope, one of many!
Maybe my problem is that I've not dropped serious cash on a sofa, but, well for the same price, all my tailored attached-back sofas look great after many years, and the loose-back ones pretty quickly started to look like dorm-room disasters. We gave them away. I'm done with dorm-room-disaster living, now. :)
Yeah, another cat owner here who specifically sought out a tight-back sofa because my last cushions were ruined by my kitty who loves to sleep on the top of the sofa. There's only so much re-fluffing you can do. All cushions had a permanent cat-shaped dent in them!
Thanks for the suggestion!
We got the one at World Market about 6 months ago. I love that when a kid wants to snuggle for a story I can just throw the cushion aside and add about 8 inches of depth to the seat. It's not as good as if we had a deep sofa but space is an issue and we have to live with small furniture.
All of these sofas look incredibly uncomfortable for anything other than meeting with an uptight friend who is serving you tea and expects you to sit up straight with your pinky extended. While I love a minimalist line above all other looks, I finally decided that I wanted a comfortable home and moved my DWR Theater sofa to my husbands office. It's kind of a bummer that people are complaining about a husband using a sofa as an armrest or having to fluff a sofa cushion every day because your cat likes it. It takes about two minutes and you and your family should have a sofa that is easy to relax in. I take it as a compliment when I see my husband napping on the sofa on a Sunday afternoon. It means I've created a home he feels comfortable and relaxed in.
Tight back modern sofas with accent throw (away) pillows have worked well for me.
good color and simple design, nice sofas.
