I may be cautious about committing to bold and bright wall colors or upholstery patterns but when it comes to pillows I am downright uninhibited. Having fun with pillows is one of the easiest and most gratifying ways to play with color and style.
Throw pillows are usually affordable and easily interchanged or re-covered with the changing seasons and your evolving aesthetics. Rather than get too matchy-matchy with your pillows, why not throw caution to the wind and mix them up, pile them high and imbue your couch with a bounty of different colors, textures and patterns.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I almost gasped aloud at the pink sofa. I'm going to be shopping for a sofa soon, I'm really crossing my finders that I'll be able to find something fabulous at one of the local resale shops, knock on wood!!
Nice but impractical. You can't sit properly on a sofa that has 9,000 pillows on it. Its like candles, you really only need 1 or 2.
Ten excellent examples of way too many pillows.
Agree with posters above. I LOVE the look, but I hate having to kick a million pillows on the floor just to sit down. I think if I wanted to get the same effect, I would buy or make a quilt with lots of different colors and textures to drape over the back and then only put a few pillows on the seat.
I did this and didn't like throwing the surplus to the floor. So, I cut back just to the covers and inserts I found comfortable, in good condition, and pretty, then left out just the number that are really used at one time. The rest were laundered and then stored for rotation. The inserts last better inside a dustmite cover under the decorative cover. I use only throw pillows whose covers can be removed. If they don't feel and smell good for napping, then they're released, regardless of how pretty they may look. The only home furnishings here that are just for looking at are hanging on the walls.
I concur. Although they always look wonderful in photos, numerous pillows on sofas and beds are just another kind of clutter to deal with when the FUNCTION of the furniture comes into play. I cut down to just my sleeping pillows and two in shams and one decorative pillow and that one is on the floor even as I write. Sad but true.
Might be ok on daybeds or other deep seats where the decorative pillows fill up the space and can actually stay in place even when sitting or sleeping.
(And I have so many beautiful pillow-sized pieces of fabric squirreled away, too...)
i love the look..but agree...even with 3 or 4 pillows on a couch you end up having to move them out of the way to sit down!
i LOVE that pink velvet couch....gimme!!!
Ten excellent pink dress of way too many pillows.
