When I was decorating my apartment, I knew I wanted color, and lots of it. But it took me a while to muster the courage to mix colors with abandon. In the end, the rule of thumb that helped me was that basically any two colors will look good together if they have the same degree of saturation. Like any decorating 'rule,' this one has a million exceptions. But here's a slideshow of blues and pinks, all of which seem to follow that general guideline, whether the colors are strong and saturated or pale and dusty.

Saturation is another way of describing a color's intensity. It's not always related to how light or dark the color is — i.e. how much white, black or grey has been added to the pure color-wheel color — but how weak or strong the color is.
