We love bed frames with built in storage. When closet space is limited, it's so convenient to have a place to store those extra bulky bedding items (and that pesky air mattress for out of town guests). We've all seen built-in drawers, but West Elm has given us a bigger and better alternative. See how to access the storage space after the jump.

The bed lifts up on an an easy-glide pivot mechanism to provide a whole bed area worth of storage space. We are surprised we haven't seen this before. No more hiding your junk under the bed with a bed skirt!
The Pivot Storage Bed Frame is currently only available in chocolate, but it is designed to fit all of West Elm's headboards. Prices range from $899 for a full size frame to $1,099 for a king size frame.

You haven't been looking hard enough, I've seen this design several times before from designers other than West Elm - and who charge much less. I like that the hardware used to raise the bed means you don't have to hold it up while precariously stretching to grab a pillow you'ved stuffed in the back. Still, I prefer traditional underbed storage.
I have something similar from IKEA at 1/3 the price, although the base is fabric covered. It stores an incredible amount of stuff, but is more suited to out of season clothes & luggage than everyday access. It is exactly what I needed.
My Grandma's motorhome bed had a similar feature (at least 10 years ago). She loved the storage space.
I would personally prefer the standard underbed drawers. It seems like much less of a hassle to slide open a drawer than to lift up the whole mattress. Knowing I'd mess up the bedding might be enough to make me hesitate to open it... at least on a lazy day. That said, our sofa does a very similar thing and I love it. It's a brown leather sofa from Mobilia (Canada) and folds flat so you can use it as a bed. The entire interior space is storage and is a great spot for storing the guest bedding and pillows... excellent in a condo or for an office that doubles as a guest bedroom.
Like the concept, as it relates to storage. Dislike the overall bed design.
They have one just like this on overstock right now. http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Tiffany-Queen-Size-Platform-Lift-Storage-Bed/4321567/product.html
We have one similar to this and we loooove it. I dont' care at all if it messes up the bed, because I don't have unnecessary pillows and throws all over it.
We live in a climate that necessitates many seasonal clothes, and we are a family of 5 so we need as much out of sight storage space as possible.
We used to have a couch like zoeintorontos that we got from sears, it's called a davenport! :)
My parents have had a bed like this in their guest room for years - it is amazing and doesn't mess up the bedding at all when you lift it up (you can do it with one hand it is that easy and light).
Kea - what is the similar bed you have from Ikea... I don't think I have ever seen it.
My folks have one of these in their motorcoach too...
I'd briefly considered swapping out my bed for one of these but the platform is a bit high for me - I prefer a lower bed.
I live in Israel and this is a standard design feature for even the simplest of beds in all sizes.... a "linen box"! I guess smaller square footage necessitated this type of creative feature long ago here...
I'm not sure I'd want to encounter "your junk" hidden under a bed at all, if you know what I mean.
alisongilb, this is the ikea bed:

I had the ikea bed that "kea" mentioned and I loved it. It was identical to the west elm one in terms of the underbed storage and it was really great. And yes, a fraction of the cost :)
My brothers frat house was in a ski chalet that had high sloping ceilings. He went to a top engineering school. Each room was designed with Hydraulic lifts that could raise or lower a platform level in each room. It was really cool. every room had their level at different heights, and one or two rooms would adjust each day, When they woke up their entire bedroom would lift high out of the way.
Can someone who owns one of these beds speak to the quality? I just read about WE beds breaking and am hesitant to purchase anything from them. I would really love to find something similar to this, but preferably upholstered and tufted. Does anyone have suggestions of where to purchase in SF?
Hrm. I saw this bed recently, and it seems I am a little late to the game. The bed is no longer available.
Does anyone have an updated link where the Pivot bed from WE or something similiar is available? I will check Ikea but the lift mechanism doesnt seem as sophisticated... . please?
