PIXEL the 32 x 32 Resolution Pixel Art LED Display

Kickstarter

At just 32 x 32 pixels, nobody is going to mistake this interactive picture frame for a Retina Display. But that's the point: PIXEL, an LED pixel art display, appeals to those of us with a soft spot for sprite based artwork, icons, and imagery of the 8-bit era when seeing the distinct pixel elements was and remains all part of the charm of art created with resolution limitations in mind...

What does 32 x 32 pixels look like? Here's a reminder how small the resolution specs really are. But when blown up and displayed on the LED PIXEL, memories of SNES and early Windows icons come rushing back to memory. The PIXEL display system isn't just limited to still images; animated gif illustrations like this one are supported too, opening an endless amount of art display possibilities of your own creation or those based off your favorite gaming or animated sources.

Here's the catch: Android users only! The PIXEL system is designed to work partnered with an Android smartphone or Android tablet via Bluetooth in conjunction with free PIXEL apps available at Google Play. Sorry, iOS users!

When the unit is turned off, the framed 15" x 15" display appears to be a mirror; while on, the PIXEL system's proximity sensor can recognize viewers and adjust the display to add an element of interactivity.

PIXEL includes:
  • 32x32 LED Panel (1,024 RGB LEDs)
  • Solid Wood Picture Frame with LED Panel & Wall Mounts
  • IOIOMint board + LED Matrix shield
  • Bluetooth Dongle
  • IR Proximity Sensor
  • Two-way Acrylic Mirror
  • Acrylic back case
  • Power Supply (110V - 240V) with US "two pronged style" plug
  • Free Android apps with PIXEL content

PIXEL is available for pre-order via Kickstarter (they've already exceeded their goals by a significant amount), with plans to ship units in April 2013.
