JonathanB was asking for advice on flowers and looking for a helpful place in his neighborhood. Flower shops in the LES are hard to come by, but up by Union Square and heading west there are some. Ariston Florist on 5th Avenue and 14th Street is a large florist with a great selection of fresh flowers. The staff is approachable – just ask for Thomas or Theodore, the owners – and they can walk you through selecting and choosing how to make a simple arrangement for your apartment.

The staff at Ariston is always helpful and willing to offer advice. When I visited, a large bunch of lilacs were being divided and put into flower arrangements with peonies by one of the staff, Angelina. It was a bold and simple combination that takes little effort to look great in a vase. This is definitely the time to enjoy lilacs before they are out of season again. At the moment Ariston’s are coming from upstate, but soon they will be getting them from further north in Vermont and then Canada as the season progresses. Their fragrance is a welcome addition to the apartment, a smell to commemorate spring, but will be from the florists’ coolers all too soon. - Matt N.
