Gerbera Daisy, by Irving Penn

Irving Penn's photos prove that you do not need your hands in the dirt to share in the appreciation and wonder of plants and flowers.

The December 06 issue of Vogue has a sneak peek of Penn's latest flower photos. And beginning in January his work will be on exhibit at the MacGill Gallery here in NYC.

Dandelion

The special insert of Penn's work is found near an article on a fashion collection inspired by flowers and a nostalgic article on memories of a mother's garden. Penn has had a long career in photography and has covered a wide range of subjects. I, of course, am partial to his flower photos. Not long ago at a good friend's apartment, I was treated to looking at his book, Flowers. The photos were timeless, the flowers seeming to burst with the same emotion that a compilation of master portraits would contain. He makes flowers into superstars.

After contemplating his photos I can image anyone's trip to the flower shop or local garden as a changed experience.
