Juniper branches at Union Square, $4.00 per bundle

It may go without saying, but the Greenmarkets are brimming with woodland harvests. The smell of evergreens, berries and herbs of the season warms the heart. These photos are from Union Square, and I am putting them up early in the event someone needs some encouragement to get over there this morning...

There were larger ring wreaths, filled with evergreens, eucalyptus, holly, juniper, and cockscomb. But the one I might buy for a gift when visiting is the small wreath, above, made out of herbs. It contains, thyme, lemon thyme, rosemary and sage. It's edible (if you really wanted to eat it), and the smell is wonderful. It would make a nice centerpiece or hung on a front door it could easily fill an entranceway with its scent as guests come and go.

For some vendors, like James Durr, above, this week may be the final Saturday they sell their goods. His stand had rows of bundled branches and large wreaths for sale. His bundled juniper, up top, is what I ended up bringing home so that we can enjoy the outdoors and remembering winter woodland strolls while keeping warm inside.
