For those appreciating color this month, one can find much inspiration at the florist. L'Olivier Downtown is a beautiful place to begin your quest; Louis, the store manager, happily welcomed us despite the bustle to create a busy Saturday afternoon's orders.
L'Olivier has a group of hydrangeas, lillies, and roses that are particularly striking. They all share the same shade of soft red...
In addition to the flowers, the shop and garden are full of carefully chosen objects and artwork.
It is worth a visit for the inspiration alone. On this day I was lucky enough to get a look at a multitude of arrangements being prepared for delivery that evening. As Louis pointed out, L'Olivier's arrangements are special for the wonderful way they utilize leaves.
Their arrangements transform leaves from their supporting role and put them into the spotlight. They form decoration as they peer out from inside clear vases. They become beautiful, swirling green sashes at the lips of vases. They substitute twine as they wrap around long stems like nori on sushi. They are folded back, giving the appearance of ribbon candy winding through the cut orchids.
When they are combined it creates a wonderful harmony among the arrangement, as if the flowers all are sharing the same breath. This also happens again as the orchids are complemented by long, ribbon-like leaves that share the same yellow.
