Local and fresh.

This is what feels good about a Saturday morning here in the city. The color is coming back to the markets. If you need a healthy dose of spring then Union Square is again busting will colors and fragrances - any of which you can take home.

If you love tulips, now is the time. Hodgson Farms had beautiful bouquets for $6. Burnt Meadow Greenhouses' many varieties, including gorgeous fringed and Parrot varieties were going fast.

Because the bouquets are local and fresh they are more durable and long-lasting. I bought a bouquet and carried it around for the entire day. When I got home and put them in water they recovered beautifully.

Early spring bulbs are also out as well - tiny hyacinths, crocuses, daffodils, and irises were out in full force. And because they are driven by temperature, not light, you can keep them blossoming in an office or in your dark apartment.

My favorite was the species tulip above, an old and wild variety that looks more at home with the crocuses (below) than the large hybrid tulips of today.
