The Science Barge, at Pier 84 near West 44th Street
New York Sun Works believes that our city's rooftops are the key to fighting pollution and rising energy and food costs, with enough square footage to grow all the vegetables our city can consume. They created The Science Barge as a floating classroom to teach about sustainability and hydroponic gardening. They 'grow food in the city with no carbon emissions, no water use, and no waste stream'.
Take a video tour - and get more visitor info - after the jump.
With rooftop systems like The Science Barge's, we could have greenmarkets in every neighborhood. Or imagine schools growing veggies to supplement the cafeteria offerings. Even just the idea of barges around the city producing locally-grown vegetables opens up a world of possibilities.
