Hyacinths are one of the better flower bargains of spring. They come in such rich colors, are long-lasting, and have a wonderful fragrance. The smell of these hyacinths is the very first thing to greet guests when they open our front door - and they are all the way over on the far side of the room.

Keeping hyacinths happy as a cut flower starts with the bottom of the stem (shown above), which should include a portion of the bulb...

'On the bulb' is the best way to buy your cut hyacinths, which you can see by quickly checking the stems before purchasing, and with the florets still closed. Sometimes you can even find them with the entire bulb still attached. They last much longer and will continue to grow in the vase as the florets open up.

I wish that everyone could smell these through the screen, they are wonderful. They came from Jack's Flowers at the Union Square Greenmarket.
