We know there are plenty of good-looking hampers available for sale, but some of them have not so good-looking price tags. And, come on, it's going to have my son's dirty socks in it. Couldn't I just figure out a way to jazz up his old plastic hamper?

Sure! I love a challenge, and this is what I came up with. Silver spray paint (with a coat of plastic primer first) and a simple orange drawstring bag. I already had the silver paint and the orange fabric on hand, so I was only out 4 bucks for the plastic primer. I think it looks much better now, but to be fair, I don't think it could've looked much worse. And his dirty socks look fabulous inside!

Nice!
I like it
Love it! I have hampers just like those and was wondering where you got the drawstring bag, or what size it was.
It does look good. I wonder if you could just use the spray paint for plastics. I know it works on Fisher-Price dollhouses but haven't tried it on any cheaper plastics.
Wow, looks great!
I think it would look great without the spray paint too. The pop of color provided by the bag is what does it for me, and no nasty paint fumes!
I love it!!! So easy and such a difference.
nice!
Yes, you could skip the primer if you have a spray paint for plastic in a color you like. I couldn't find one that was metallic enough, and I really liked the silver spray paint I had on hand. Just had to find a way to make it stick to the plastic. The plastic primer enables you to use any spray paint on plastic. Fun stuff.
I stitched up the bag myself. Just make sure you pre-wash the fabric a lot, esp if you use a bright color, so it won't fade onto damp dirty clothes. Not that my son would throw wet clothes into the hamper ;)
Nice job. I never thought a (plastic) hamper could look so good!
I nearly skipped this one because I kind of rolled my eyes at the idea of a hamper make-over - but I'm so glad I didn't miss it. This transformation made my jaw drop. You changed a "meh" piece of plastic to something that actually looks cool and it was so simple! I never would have thought to use a liner to play off the holes in the hamper. Functional, too!
It looks really good!
Very cool!
Great!
heart! awesome, my jaw dropped too as i was not sure what to expect... keeping it in mind for the future as i do not have a hamper like this... tempted to get one when in need of replacing old ones though.... :)
Awesome. I learn so much from this site. I didn't even know there was such a thing as plastic primer.
This is a great idea! My boys' laundry must remain out in the open too and I never thought of just painting the ugly hamper to fit in better. Love. Love. Love.
I'm running out for primer and silver paint first thing in the morning!
Great idea and its so versatile!
@angelaflores I have this hamper too and Pottery Barn Kids liners fit perfectly. I got my liners on sale for about $5 each.
very nice! u have great taste !
What a great way to use up what you have on hand. Nice idea!
It's like cool!
Love!
I converted a cylindrical shaped plastic hamper into a way cool storage bin for my daughter's stuffed toys using a laundry bag from Target by Orla Kiely a couple of years ago... however I dropped the hamper down into the bag since it had an adorable print and featured the same colors of the room. It hides the plastic altogether!
I've since found a nice grey geometric print laundry bag to convert my son's hamper in the same fashion. It requires no effort whatsoever and transforms an otherwise ugly utilitarian piece into a coordinating accent for the kids' rooms.
Nice job.
Excellent job!
Love it!!
nicely done!
