Tyler at Plastolux posted this DIY project last spring and it's easily one of the best modern DIY projects we've seen — he creates his own Saarinen-style end tables using inexpensive MDF and Bose speaker bases.
The most expensive element is the tulip-shaped speaker base (Bose PS-6) which are available for about $70 each — still a fraction of the cost of a licensed reproduction round Saarinen side table which start at about $475.
It's also important to note that the DIY version is about 3" shorter than the real thing.
For Tyler's account of how he did it and all his DIY projects, see Plastolux | DIY Eero Saarinen Side Table.

If I had a use for the speakers it might be worth it to buy the speakers and use the bases!
i think i'd simply rather buy a knockoff for about the same price it'd take to make this...
A waste of good vintage speaker stands! They should be paired with the bose speakers and proudly displayed. I have the bose with tulip stands and love them!
