Melissa & Doug has a vast array of play food; if your family eats it, chances are M&D has a corresponding wooden set. Features like play knives that allow little chefs to cut apart velcro-connected food, oven mitts and spatulas make these sets particularly cute and engaging. Here are ten of our favorites:
- Cutting Fruit
- Sushi Slicing Play Set
- Wooden Bake & Serve Brownies
- Grill Set
- Pizza Party
- Slice and Bake Cookie Set
- Stir Fry Slicing Set
- Sandwich Making Set
- Bake & Decorate Cupcake Set
- Food Groups
Each set is $19.99 from Melissa & Doug, and we've had great luck finding discounted sets at TJX stores.

Don't forget their ice cream set! It's been the biggest hit in our house.
I have the pizza set the children love it. when we clean up they sort all the vegi's and meat so much learning happens even with clean up . I also have used the vegi's and sandwich at the preschool great quality and cleans up easy.
We have several of these and they are a huge hit with my two-year-old and his friends. I put all the food in a large bin with a lid, and that's the easiest way for us to keep it all together.
My son (almost three) LOVES his vegetable cutting set.
I am not a fan of the M&D cutting food. The design is usually pretty unattractive compared to other vendors (Plan Toys, Haba) and it wears poorly. Our Plan Toys cutting fruit and veg look brand new after two years of heavy use and anything M&D looks sad.
We have both Plan and M&D, and I've found the M&D to actually be quite durable. For those of us with smaller budgets, I think it's a great option. That wok looks so fun. Too bad we already have too much play food.
My kids have been playing with the sushi, veggie, and birthday cake sets (I THINK they're all M&D, pretty sure) for about three years now, nearly every day. We've lost a lot of parts, but it doesn't really seem to matter, they still pick these over the plastic or cloth playfood we have.
We have a the slice and bake cookies as well as the fruit and veggies, But i wasn't aware there was a wok and a kabob set- Love it!!
Great products, good investment.
As a preschool teacher, I found these sets held up quite well in a classroom setting so I'd imagine they'd last a long time in a home. In a classroom, where they're used by 40+ kids per day (am & pm classes) I found that the M & D food lasts about 2 school years... plastic lasts longer, but is also less popular and used less by the kids in general...
I don't know how widespread A.C. Moore is (craft store like Michael's) but ours carries Melissa and Doug toys, and as long as there are no exclusions you can use the discount coupons that come in the mail. A.C. Moore also takes Michael's coupons. I've never tried buying M&D products from them but 40% off would be great. Our M&D stuff is mostly from discounted places like TJMaxx, thrift stores and Amazon sellers.
We have a variety of "cutting food" from different manufacturers, plastic and wooden, and the rate that the Velcro comes off (either glued or stapled) seems about equal among all of them. For the most part ours have all held up decently after about 2 years of almost daily use.
