While I realize that some intrepid people actually do live in these houses full-time, I don't think I have the stamina — or patience — for that. Instead, if I had a backyard, I'd totally get a little house and make it an office/ guest room/ whatever!

This is awesome! I have been talking to my husband for about 6 months about how I want to buy a pre-made barn and put it on a small space of land near the ocean so we can always have a "vacation home." :D

I want a 400-700 sf house for my family. We have 600 sf apartment now and it's spacious. With our own yard we could totally do much smaller. But if we found a perfect house that was 700 sf I guess I could go for it. :D A lot smaller mortgage, a lot smaller ecological footprint, a lot less stuff accumulated, more closeness and coziness, more money saved and thus more freedom..
The majority of the world live in small spaces and are completely happy. And not so many decades ago people lived smaller everywhere.
I would so love a tiny hideaway in the back yard.
