Playstation 3 Solid State Drive Upgrade Does What?

Ever wonder what would happen if you were to replace that slow 5400RPM laptop hard drive in your Playstation 3 with something a little bit beefier? Say, something like a $650 256GB Solid State Drive from Samsung? Gamespot does the DIY dance and reveals for us the truth behind the performance gains (if any) when upgrading something like your PS3 to a next generation hard drive.

Test System Setup: PlayStation 3 Slim Stock Hard Drive - Hitachi 5K500 120GB, Samsung 256GB SSD.

So, were there quicker load times? Improved gaming performance? Better media playback? From the looks of it, you may be better off spending that $650 on a new laptop. There are a few seconds of improved performance here and there, but we gather the performance would not be as drastic as some may think it may be.

While there certainly are benefits to upgrading to a solid state drive, you certainly won't be seeing any gains throwing it into a console. Instead, we'd suggest throwing in a 500GB 2.5" standard magnetic hard drive instead and using it to house all of your media goodies!
