For many months now I have heard the song "Black and Yellow" by Wiz Khalifa played daily on speakers at various locations, and inside my head at all other times. Even though it's about football, I'm afraid the only way to make it stop is to do a thorough exploration of black and yellow rooms, so please enjoy and try not to catch it.
Surprisingly, none of these black and yellow rooms scream "bumblebee" at first glance, because healthy doses of white are mixed in to balance out the stronger colors. The combination creates visual energy through its contrast and saturation. Even in a traditional space like the first picture, the bright yellow of the chairs feels like a modern addition and keeps the composition from feeling too stuffy. In a larger setting like the hotel library room, yellow is applied to all soft surfaces for a contemporary look.
Could you live with black and yellow?

It's a great kitchen combo, though I don't see any in the photos. I had a kitchen with black and white tile floors, white cabinets, and mustard yellow walls. Looked great!
I love the yellow and gray in the bedroom. I find myself so drawn to that combo lately. Do you think yellow is the new orange?
I do live w\black and yellow.
My wood floors and front door (including frame) are painted glossy black. My walls and all woodwork are painted golden yellow. My sofa is brown, chairs are rattan with black metal legs - all other furniture is walnut.
I think it's the neutral furniture that helps to avoid the 'bumblebee' look for me.
They were my wedding colors (add champagne grey/brown to that, too), so I'm always game for a good collection of black and yellow! Also I third the opinion of how awesome that bookcase is :)

I absolutely LOVE yellow and black/grey rooms! The yellow bedroom (2nd from the left in the bottom row) is one of my ALL-TIME favorite yellow bedrooms! My home office/guest room has taken on a yellow theme, and I'm hoping to inject more greys and blacks soon! :)
Yellow is a pretty interesting color. You either use a lot of it or very little. Or, as one of my mentors put it, "It must dominate, or accent, but never compete."
