We're big fans of pocket and sliding doors, which allow a space to be sectioned off without blocking circulation, air flow, and views when you need them. If you're looking for a way to enclose a bedroom in a loft or open plan apartment, dividers like these can be really useful.
Shown above are examples from around the world—Spain, Sweden, Japan, and the U.S. Possibilities range from traditional pocket doors (which slide in an out of a gap in the wall) and custom-fitted sliding doors in opaque, slatted, or translucent materials. White Enamel Four-P...
Love all of them, but my favorite has to be the one with the strongest visual oomph, with that enfilade effect: Jon and Ro's place in NY. Love especially how the two strongly graphic artworks on either side the door work with the one over the bed, but only when that slider's open.
This may be the final inspiration needed for me to convert our old (1939) swinging French doors .... dividing living room from dining room ... with barn door hanging/sliding hardware!
I so wish I had sliding/pocket doors in my apartment...
I've been thinking about putting some of our doors on track systems. Many of our rooms are narrow, so the open doors really intrude.
#2/3 and #4/5 are so great! We have pivoting door panels in our apartment which I also really like - they're not really space-saving like these sliders are, but they do allow for privacy without sacrificing the open floor plan - and they look great.
But...@DeborahMcP - If your vintage doors still work, please don't replace them! Most people would kill for original 1930's architectural features!
I have a pocket door to my bedroom in my new home and I LOVE IT!
I am also considering a sliding door for a small bathroom - but I don't think the existing door frame can be removed. Has anyone tried installing sliding doors over an exisitng frame? Any suggestions?
HeyJoanne
I'm thinking about doing the same thing. I was trying to find a plan to create a sliding door in my bathroom, that would really free up a lot of space.
Minchee - my contractor thinks it can be done (I needed a contractor for a few other things and just added this on) and am going to use hardware from Johnson Hardware. I have space next to the door frame for the open sliding door. http://jhusa.net
