- Inspiration for my palette:
- Ethnic textiles inspire me with their unexpected color combinations. My husband's black background ink drawing was a beginning point for this room. I just had to see it against a cobalt background!
- Colors used in my room
- Deep Cobalt Blue, Black, Fuchsia, White, Turquoise
- Tips for using color successfully
- Go with your heart and the colors you love will work together. Mixing things up experimentally can get you results that aren't predictable. It's really not that serious and you can always change it later.

I love the jewel tones in this room. I'd drink tea here for sure.
This is lovely. Seconded.
I love this. The cobalt comes off more as a royal purple, but I think it's great either way. The rug is amazing.
Totally inspired. Love it!
I love the combination of colors - this room is a feeling generator! Too many globes for my taste though..
Oh, my! We seem to have the same taste in colour and textile. Beautiful room. I would love to see the house tour.
I can "smell" this room. Incense, rosemary, mushrooms, lavender. yum....
Way to represent West Texas with style! :)
Visually stimulating and yet, comforting. I really like the jewel like feel of the room.
NOW we're talkin' color!
My absolute favorite so far!
A resounding "yes" from a neutrals-with-texture person (me). And my, are those two-toned quilts hanging as curtains? Lots of little touches to draw the eye here, along with the color pizzazz. I couldn't live in this room, but I sure could enjoy visiting privileges.
Where are the chairs from? J'adore a tufted armless.
Pulled it off well. Not my colors but had to click it favorited. Really like the glass block window.
Oh how I would love to just move right in. May I transport all that lovely to my wee space? Beautiful.
Oh my gosh, I am seriously, SERIOUSLY in love. Can this house PLEASE be featured on a house tour?? Polly, if you don't mind, could you answer a few questions to help out a beginner like me?
1) What did you use for the curtains? It looks like a quilt I saw on Anthropologie--is that right??
2) Where did you get those lampshades? I have been on an agonizing search for colored lampshades, and other than Anthropologie, I have not been able to find ANY other places with good, modern colored and/or patterned lampshades.
3) Where did you find that anatomy bust?? My husband's a med student, and I am totally going to search for one now for our office now. :)
Love the lush colors! Finally an entry with inviting cozy colors!
Thank you so much for all the kind comments! I appreciate you taking time to say something.
@looseleaf. I was fortunate enough to be given these chairs by my mom. They are probably about 40 years old. They are actually comfortable!
@spiffyonion I am so happy that you feel a connection with ou room and delighted to answer the questions!!
1. These are quilts that I found on Target clearance about 8 years ago. I love the no sew clip system for curtains that allow switching looks out easily.
2. About the table lamps and shades, both are from Target a few years ago. You may be noticing a pattern here. It's one of my major sources apart from thrifting. I think they still carry some interesting colors. I found the vintage shade for the floor lamp at a thrift store.
3. A teacher friend gave us Pat, the anatomical model. It was in the way up at school and she said we were the only ones she could think of who might want it.
I love all the colors and patterns in this room. And I love that you used your husband's art as a starting point!
Great room! I don't usually like the rooms like this but I don't feel overwhelmed by color looking at this one!
Oh My, you really should win. It all works. The jewelled tones are just perfect. What a wonderful space.
So beautiful! LOVE all the colors!
The white couch, white trim, and pendants really ground it all. Beautiful.
This is gorgeous! I want to read a book in there.
What shade of paint is in the bright blue room you can see in the first pic? It's exactly what I've been picturing for my daughter's room!
GREAT use of color! Love the colors against the black and white details...
This is lovely. I imagine you feel completely transported in this room. Boldly and beautifully done.
It's a shame that another, far more boring room will likely win this category (I am still not sure how that gray/navy nursery has so many favorites), but I think you deserve to win.
You had me at the anatomy bust. Love it!
This room is fabulous. I would never want any of these colors in my home, yet I love that they are in your home. Quite a winning combo.
Beautiful colour and pattern, I'd love to spend time in here! And I think that blue is just a tiny bit darker than one that we use...
I've never been one to like color sorry. I repeatedly see it used and it comes across like a daycare center. This home is friggen amazing. I'm totally impressed with your skills. I wish I had color down as well as you do. This amazing and Home Tour worthy for any cause. Thanks for sharing.
Fabulous room! I should have waited to vote until the end because I keep having new favourites and now I regret voting for others. This room is vibrant, artistic and inviting! As a fellow contestant, you should know that you've just inspired the living room wall colour in my next home!
Fantastic. I love everything about this room. Except the wall color, but that's just me.
I was going to say the drapes reminded me of a quilt I once had (and loved) purchased at Target - after reading your comment, now I know why.:)
Love this room, but more than that I admire your willingness to incorporate so many different colors, textures and designs into your decor. Colorful rooms always inspire me to think outside the box. Why limit ourselves when we can have it all?
Polly, thanks for sharing! What a gorgeous, warm & intriguing space! With every view, something new draws me in for a closer look.
I love the dark jewel tone of the rooms - very beautiful. Ditto to Reaal said...I truly admire your willingness to be so bold on the colors. It really is an ispiration.
Nice color combinations. Love the jewel-tone accents, from the pillows and turquoise lamp shades to the wall art and area rug, it all fits together very well.

I love this room. It's probably even more striking in person. Great job!
Hi, Polly here. Thank you so very much for your kind comments!!!
@Hello Katie sorry I took so long to respond! The color in the dining room is Behr Jamaica Bay. One of the first experiences I have had with wall color where I've absolutely loved it without reservation. I bet your daughter's room would look fabulous with it.
quilts as drapes. interesting.
where is the rug from???! love it!
Hi Polly, I was just going through the previous years contest and ran across your room in 2010. It was nice then, but you have really stepped it up since then and now this is spectacular! Great after!
I really really appreciate all the sweet comments! It's been a lot of fun to be part of the contest. @mewtastic, I got this vintage rug from a little store called "It's About Time" here in Abilene. They carry both old and new stuff and it's beautifully curated. There's a spot on the rug that I cover with one of the table legs that helped me get it for a good price. Thank you Charisse, for noticing about my 2010 entry. So glad you like the changes! It's an ever evolving process...I really am wanting to lighten the walls again.
