Backyard Inspiration: Ponds and Fountains

"Yes, as every one knows, meditation and water are wedded forever." -- Melville

Furthermore, as everyone knows, meditation is the cure for everything from insomnia to indigestion. So start meditating over water in your own backyard with the addition of a peaceful pond or a frothy fountain.

Building a pond or installing a fountain is no small project, but it can greatly enhance an outdoor space. For those with no yard or a very small space, there are options for building raised water gardens on decks or creating fountains from salvaged urns. A water pump can be added to almost any receptacle of water to transform it from a blah to bubbly.

We're hoping these photos of ponds and fountains (as well as the extreme need to meditate) will encourage us to make-over our poor little fish pond. No one knows how old the pond is or how far back the goldfish family tree goes, but it has been a self-sustaining fish pond for decades. Do you think it's time to intervene?

We'll start by weeding out some plants and installing a solar pump. Landscaping will come along eventually and someday maybe our little pond will be transformed into a zen-like oasis. In the meantime, we'll just stare at the images, take deep breaths, and soak in the inspiration.
