One of my favorite personal mottos is "What if?" A pool cantilevered over the side of a skyscraper building starts with someone initiating the curiosity to explore new engineering and design solutions. The innovative pool is the feature design of this particular downtown building; however, any well designed pool can demand to be the center of attention.
Top Row:
- The Joule Hotel (Dallas, Texas)
- The Standard Hotel (Downtown Los Angeles, California)
- Rooftop Pool (New York City, New York)
- Former Greta Garbo Estate (Los Angeles, California)
- Alila Ubud Resort (Bali, Indonesia)
Bottom Row:
- Private Residence (Tucson, Arizona)
- The Badeschiff (Berlin, Germany)
- The Trojan House (Melbourne, Australia)
- W Hotel (Hong Kong)
- Transparent Pool

Being afraid of heights, the first and last pools would be terrifying for me. But I appreciate the design nonetheless!
What beautiful pool spaces..a bit scary but beautiful still!
It seems like the first one, that you're going to drop off the far end! Creepy!
they may be vulgar displays of wealth but they are really pretty vulgar displays of wealth.
i really do like the last one a lot.
What are you going to do when a bird or some item hits the glass and causes it to crack then break while your kids are in the pool? Bye kids.
the decadence!
Two weeks ago, my niece slipped and fell from one of these types of pools at her friend's house because they didn't want to obstruct their view with a fence. My niece fell 8 feet onto a lower patio. Luckily, she's fine.
Greige,
I understand, however, I've fallen standing around a normal pool and did quite a good job on my leg and head.
Fun to look at, maybe cool to try. go big or go home.
These types of pools are not made for children, of course. Kids (adults with kids) should just go to general family pools.
Absolutely stunning. Makes me want to take a dip.

A bird? Cracking the glass causing it to break? Seriously?!
What kind of "bird" are you thinking of, a 747?
The 5th picture(Bali) has left me breathless and homesick (Jamaica). *sigh*
@Oneformybaby: I completely understand that people slip and fall in and around pools, which is why I mentioned that there was no fence at the cantilevered edge. There is no reason that any child should be falling 8 feet off of a cliff because you don't want to obstruct the view. It's just dumb and dangerous.
And yes, I accept that my niece (she is 12) and her parents had their own safety responsibilities that they shirked in this situation.
It is also silly because if you can afford a cantilevered dec you can probably afford some glass core fencing that will not obstruct your view and be safe. That kind of pool would be murder on your homes liability insurance.
OMG...amazing pools! That first one would push my bravery to the extreme test (for I too am afraid of heights). Talk about unique - I would love to experience each one of them.
I am most decidedly not afraid of heights, and normally delight in high places. But that first picture gives even me the heeby geebies. Still, could be a bit of a thrill.
I <3 that last pool.
the lead image which looks like it's about to pour out down the side of the building is incredibly humorous - really funny. the caterpillar is wonderful too. thanks for these.
The lap pool at the Hilton Auckland is also pretty cool.

I wonder how many of these pool owners actually swim.
One day AT is all about "minimal impact" and the next day it's all about conspictuous consumption and trophis for philistine hedge fund owners. That's freedom of speech!

Too scary for me. If I had unlimited funds, I would make one of those natural pools. I guess I like my pools in the ground, not in mid-air or hanging off a cliff. Not relaxing at all!
A pool with a view in an urban landscape is very exiting! I love the one in Bali. I am happy to work in the tropics where we all have access to pools and of course the sea!

@Nani, well (and amusingly) put.
The pool in Bali looks like heaven. I also like that public pool in Berlin.
The one with the transparent bottom that's the ceiling of the hallway below? Ack, could you imagine keeping that clean? A bit of wind and you'd be up at the pool fishing out leaves. Your chlorine balance gets a bit off and the ceiling of your hallway would start turning a bit green.
How nice to start a hot, humid morning fantasizing about beautiful pools! These are fascinating!
There is absolutely NOTHING worrying about the catilevered pool! If you don't believe me, take a proper look at the picture.... See? You can actually see how thick the glass is AND you can also see that, not only does the glass extend above the height of the water line, but that there are also glass panels either side of the pool too. Safety AND view! Ofcourse, I could be mistaken and maybe that end pane has a nasty habit of swinging open like a catflap from time to time, but I think that someone would have picked up on it by now.
If you really want to stress about something, take a look at the hotel's website where there are more images of the pool and, in particular, look out for that outdoor sofa thingy with the oversized pramhood. Imagine if a powerful freak wind blew across the rooftop and scooped that thing up. Anyone sitting on it would find themselves paragliding halfway across Dallas.... they'd have hell of a view though.
I said "catilevered" but I meant "cantilevered". The former would very probably have an end like a catflap.
As a swimmer who always wishes she had her own pool in the house, the last one is just jaw-droppingly awesome. Some of the best swims I've had made me feel as if I were I flying and that last glass-bottomed pool is like a dream.
Who knew! - Time to rethink my pool ideal.
Thanks
Acrossthepond, I was just going to say that people should look at the photo better before they comment...
and if I had any pool I wouldn't let any kids near it...its a lawsuit waiting to happen..
It would keep them off the lawn though, niche! ;)
5th one, top row, i'm building it. ... I've gotta have this in my backyard. It totally matched my modern theme i'm going for in my entire house.
@ Nani: Ha ha! you called it!
