I know! They look just like those plasticky chairs! The single material, industrially manufactured, injection molded resin chairs that are everywhere! But they're not: they're Porcelain Chairs by Sam Durant and they made me take a second look at what I walk past and sit on every day.
In contrast to the production of the resin chairs on which they're based,
"There is no patent or copyright on the design or manufacturing technique, allowing for limitless production of virtually identical chairs. It is probably the cheapest and most universal piece of furniture, found in nearly every country in the world."
These nine porcelain chairs were made by hand without moulds using a different craftsperson for each of the reproductions.
You can read more about the chairs at Sam Durant's web site.
