There isn't a backyard or balcony that James Stephenson can't whip into shape. He tends to veer towards more hardscape design for clients that want a very usable and easily maintained space.
At last Thursday's meetup, James impressed the crowd with images of his recent projects. He likes to use bluestone pavers, railroad ties he's 'picked up along the way,' and bamboo as major elements of design in these large and small spaces. James loves clean lines and the combination of wood, stone and greens...

Very nicely done. I'm particularly fond of this image:

The usage of grasses has been overlooked for far too long. Sure, flowers or bushes could have been put up there, but they would not have the same SOUND as grasses do.
And there ARE lots of trees and plants, all in containers, in that space too.
It's not a HUGE space, either. But that is enough to entertain, relax and enjoy. If you can't live in the midst of a forest or grassland, you can bring nature to you.
That idea works for small patios, surburban back yard or decks, or even the house in the middle of nowhere can have the same set up and enjoy it just as much.
I love this and I'm also a fan of Matt James' work on HGTV's The City Gardener which, unfortunately, isn't on anymore. Does anyone have a recommendation for an urban landscape artist in the Southern California area?
