Approximately 500 tons of cork is imported into Australia every year, and even though cork natural, renewable, completely biodegradable and fully recyclable, less than 5% of Australia's cork is recycled, so Melbourne Zoo is running a 'Corks For Elephants' campaign to use funds from the recycled cork to care for their elephants.
The collected corks are sold for reuse in mats, tiles, and ground cover. Recently the funds from the zoo's 'Corks For Elephants' campaign purchased an ultrasound machine, shade clothes and a heavy duty washing machine.
