This is so sweet. Melissa sent in her "work in progress" this past weekend and would love our feedback.
"I started redesigning my apartment about a year ago when I stumbled onto your sight. You will probably recognize the designers from your website that inspire me.
My apartment is about 650sq feet so maybe next year I'll enter. But the competition is steep! I'd love your feedback on where to go from here."
In our opinion, she's doing a fine job. We would 1. keep adding color (pillows, rug), 2. form the living room more (turn the rug parallel to the sofa) and 3. try the bed against a wall as opposed to a window. Check out her 4 pics and lend her a hand in the comment thread below. (Thanks, Melissa!)

My immediate critique/concern is the TV in the bedroom precariously perched on what looks like a stool. Too easy to have an accidental tipover and particularly dangerous if you have small children. If you do rearrange the bed perhaps put the TV on the low table shown in the other picture.
Melissa--
Love what you have going so far.
In the living room, you seem to be wrestling a little with mod/slick and warm/woody... and while a mix will work, I think you need to do some cross-referencing... a more modern drum shade on the standing wrought iron lamps... a more traditional pillow on the white mod chair, for example. IF, that is, you want to move forward with the mix
The bookcase needs some "tapered mass" to each side to integrate it better into the room... a dining-type/accent chair flanking, perhaps with a small-scale piece of art hung above each, on both sides, That will also give you a more calming view from the red sofa to counter the asymmetry of the piece itself.
I think also next on the to-do list is a sofa upgrade for the piece beneath the window.. or is that your bed? If so, dress it in something tailored so it reads more sofa than bed.
Kepp us posted! You've made some great choices so far. It is fresh, spare but still welcoming and relaxing.
(and thanks for letting us play armchair quarterback!!)
I like the color choices a lot. What is on top of the fridge? Are they patterned casseroles?
I especially like the bookcase behind the headboard. Is it fastened to the bed so that you can lean back on pillows?
I'd have to think a while to get more specific, but I'm pretty sure I'd like to see an opaque wuite curtain in front of the above-the-door-storage area in the bedroom, both to hide the storage and to refer to the sheers.
And in a similar way that jimkk refers to the precariousness of the TV, I think that round mirror wants to just roll of that dresser, so I'd like to see it hung on whatever wall it ends up on.
Once the bed is put in front of a wall, the white cubbies above it will be able to refer to the white panes a little easier. I think I'd want a series of 3 identical picture frames in a maple wood tone with white mats framing 3 related subjects above the top of the cubbies. The maple would be referring to the look of the dresser.
I do love the color of blue in the bedroom, though.
It looks like that other sheer is obscuring a broken closet door? Not sure what's happening there. That's about all I can think for the moment. I also like the wall color in the kitchen, but I would like to see some dish cloths or something in a pattern that had some of that color to tie it in, though.
Jean mentioned the casseroles on top of the fridge. Good call. I also notice a blue teapot and mug. I can't discern the color on the kitchen walls (it's lovely though - is it a salmon?) but what about putting the blue things together on a shelf over the sink so they pop against the nice wall color. You obviously like blue (the bedroom is so fresh and relaxing looking) and I'm wondering if you could put some art against the blue that has the salmon color from the kitchen wall. Just a thought.
It's a wonderful work in progress. I think you have a great start to a comfortable and stylish place.
I do know that I have to continually unclutter the fridge door since people give me magnets. As much as I like them, I know that when I go to someone's hom and they have them, I never quite like them. You might want to stick to your fav mags/photos. Somehow other people see our apartments differently than we do......but its a really, really nice place. Keep up the good work.
Great start, great colors.
The bookcase used as a headboard and blocking a window is an inspired choice, but not working for me. (I know - trial and error).
Also, in the living room, the bookcase could be something special with some paint and better organization. Atleast paint the back of the cubbies a bright fun, high contrast color (red perhaps?) to make it pop. Or, if you don't want to paint, cut some foam baord, wrap it in bright fabric and stick in the back of the shelf.
Then, ORGANIZE your goodies so they're show-offable. Also, don't back too much on the shelves - so they have room to breath. Make the bottom half, books, TV, etc. Then, the top four shelves can really POP with a better arrangements. (again trial and error, helps here, as do looking at books/ mags & bringing a friend with a good eye over to help you work it). It makes a big difference when you turn your storage into visual statement. Key to small space living, I think.
And one more thing, as time goes on - no rush - I'd keep an eye out for some stronger statement-making lamps in the livingroom. And perhaps a real coffee table. I like using a cot as a coffee table in low key, beach house way, but your other furniture seems to be moving in a chic-er direction (the red sofa, the 60's chair, which is awesome!)
You could use the cot at the foot of the bed (if you have room?).
Of course, of course - just my opinion. And thanks for showing.
I'm feeling an intense urge to paint the wall behind the shelves a deep brown or eggplant that knocks them back, then go with p(too)'s side tables, preferably with some glitz and/or mirrors above them, so that the eye admires the whole composition rather than fixing on the more utilitarian storage. It's not that I have any problem with the shelves as such -- it's just that they need to step back and not compete with dramatic pieces like the red sofa.
Can anyone tell me what kind of chair that is? I've been looking for a reading/lounging chair...
Great start and great color choices.
I agree that a rich color in the livingroom would be great. If you don't go that direction, I'd try a deeply colored rug or two that are larger than the one you have now and clearly delineate the space, as well as non-sheer curtains in a complementary color. This would help anchor the space.
I'd also like to see small matched pair of items on either side of the bedroom window (sconces, framed art)and the cubbies moved elsewhere. The flow of energy and balance will be much better.
Good luck!
I love the ample space! I do agree that Melissa should add more color with pillows, maybe translucent beaded curtain strands (if that's your thing), even plants! I noticed that nobody seems to want plants inside the house. In my last apartment, I had a juniper on my sink, which was strategically located beside a window.
