Be sure to read through the captions on the images at Environmental Graffiti - the delve into some interesting details about toilet nicknames. Why do the Brits call it a "loo"? Read caption nine. Who was the original "John"? Check out number 14. And don't even get me started on Thomas Crapper (number six).
Now you can soak up some nature while answering the call of nature!

pretty pretty pretty. I am grateful, however, that my computer does not offer the gift of scent.
love this article i love remote loos :-) You must add the posh one at Spirit Island in Jasper nat park, Alberta, Canada. Only accessible by boat and smells like oranges yum :-)
Here's my picture of an old outhouse! I hope the link works:

This outhouse had two seats; a lower one for children, and a higher one for the adults.
And not far from this outhouse was this cabin:

I found these gems at the Wild Irishman Mine past the ghost town of Saints John in Colorado. Yes, Saints. Not Saint. I'm amazed at how these buildings still stand despite years and years of long winters. You need 4x4 to get up there, but oh my gosh. The views! This is the view!

I love whomever wrote this. What style. :)
Those are gorgeous photos! I wouldn't want to go in them, though. I have enough problem with pests in local, cleaned-daily restrooms. XD
If you are out in the middle of nowhere why would you need an outhouse??
JDOEY, my guess is that if the photographer were to turn around, there would be a home/cabin nearby (eg. remote Forest Service/Park Service ranger cabin). Even if you don't have neighbors, some comfort from the wind/rain/snow is nice, along with keeping the waste confined to a pit.
Tanizaki's famous essay "In Praise of Shadows" starts off with reflections on a traditional Japanese toilet....
The first photo was definitely taken within a few hundred miles of my home - hills are a dead giveaway - and we had an outhouse a lot like that at our cabin when I was growing up. Picturesque, but I much prefer plumbing. :)
I have a friend who lives in 200 year old log cabin on a sheep farm. She has an outhouse. For their wedding anniversary, her husband had a window installed in the outhouse so that she can keep an eye on her sheep while she is, ah, otherwise engaged. She said it was the best gift she could have gotten. What a great lady!
