My dream house has an expansive backyard with a tastefully modern swimming pool and a deck with a dining table that comfortably seats at least 12. My actual house has an itty-bitty patio that's about 6 feet wide. What can you do when you're renting and your outdoor dreams are bigger than your outdoor space? Check out these balconies and roof decks from our tours.

that last one is amazing
Tiny? Those are medium to big!
These balconies are all HUGE in comparison to my 4 x 2.5 ft ledge. How are these in anyway tiny?
I'm dying to know where daniel got those chairs!
Tiny? The writer of this post must be living in a mansion:)
I love the hanging thing in the first photo. I see funky stuff all the time I don't quite know what to do with, inspiration doesn't hit me between the eyes like it used to. This photo reminds me to turn things upside down for a little nudge.
It's nice that Apartment Therapy is actually featuring apartments for a change (instead of cottages and houses.) And while many of these are about ten times the size of any apartment balcony I've had, it's nice to see what others have done for some style inspiration. However, for most apartment dwellers lucky enough to have balconies, use of space is our #1 issue, not style. (my current balcony is about 3' by 5'). It would be nice to have more pictures of designs that address that concern.
A lot of these have the planters hanging outside the railings, which is prohibited mostly, because at best it's a nuisance dripping on your downstairs neighbors and at worst a hazard if it falls off. Showing one of these with the planters on the inside would be realistically helpful.
Does anyone know what material was used for the bright blue Sydney balcony?
My balcony flooring is hideous and I love the idea of "wall to wall" carpeting.
Yeah, if these are tiny balconies then I'm not sure what I have. I guess mine is more of a smoking ledge (1'x8'). I just have a ton of potted plants on mine, though I am thinking I may try doing more of a vertical arrangement this year so I can get more out of it.
Ditto, everyone who laughed at the notion that these balconies are "tiny"!

I enjoyed your tutorial, my balcony is almost identical to yours. I used outdoor fabric for privacy on the banister last summer, but that didnt allow sunlight to enter and many of my plants died. I toyed around with the reed fencing but thought it wouldnt provide enough privacy (more importantly block my view TO the other neighbors back yards. I think I will try to use it this spring.
I think some of these look bigger than they actually are because you can't see all of the walls from the camera angle. I love the last photo and am going to try to recreate what I can (although I have no idea how I'm going to convince my boyfriend that his !electric! grill needs to go bye-bye).
@Talby, I purchased the chairs at Target several years ago. I have to re-polyurethane then every few years.
