Last week's post on How to Watch TV in Bed Without Disturbing Your Partner really hit home. Even if you ban TV in the bedroom as we do, debates can still happen over reading late into the night with the light on.
We're looking for options other than sleeping in separate rooms. We love this list of 10 Best Bedlights for Readers, but want a light that doesn't disturb a sleepy partner.
Some options: task lamps, headlamps or book lights? Force your partner to wear an eye mask? Have you used any special lighting products to keep your light to your side of the bed?

Try a dimmer or at least a bulb that isn't too bright. If the other person is sensitive to ALL light, you might be better off just not reading in bed because you'll never be able to do it. I have a Nook Color, which has a backlit LCD screen, so I'm all set with light. When reading paper books, we just turn on a side table lamp.
This is a big one for us. I need to read before falling asleep and any light at all disturbs him. So, I've tried it all. My family thinks I should start a Museum of Booklights Through the Ages, because I used to buy every booklight I saw. I have two favorites - a headlamp and a very light one that clips to the top of the book.
However, the Kindle with lighted case has been life changing in many ways, not the least of which is the built in light. So that's what I use now.
The lights that attach to the top of the Kindle are pretty good, and pretty cheap. Personally though, when I want to go to sleep, it would take a lot more than a light left on to stop me.
Also- I love that wallpaper!
Also, what is that wallpaper? Yes please.
Thankfully, my hubby can sleep while I read in bed. He doesn't understand how I can read for an hour (or more) without falling asleep. I don't understand how he can only read 2-3 sentences before falling asleep!
I just read on my iPad. In the darkness, I can turn the screen down to the dimmest setting and still read clearly without spreading too much light. Unfortunately, all my paper books are gathering dust, because I do most of my reading before bed (the library ebook system is getting a workout though).
Luckily, I am usually ready to sleep before my husband so my reading doesn't bother him. Also, I'm usually able to fall asleep when he's watching tv or playing his PSP. On the odd nights I'm unable to sleep with the noise/light, he quits for the night. Has anyone's sleep partner tried sleep masks to block out the light?
Tallsarah, I'm with you! Reading can keep me up all night if the book's good!
For those of us who like reading real books as opposed to Kindles - seriously, look into the Lightwedge (http://www.lightwedge.com/Welcome/LightWedge-Paperback-Book-Light). As a longtime bookseller I heartily recommend this booklight! It lights up the whole page with a soft glow which isn't so bright as a lamp that shines on the page. I bought my husband one for his birthday a few years ago and he LOVES it.
I also swear by the Kindle case that comes with the built in reading light. The little LED light pops out of the corner of the case, and casts just enough light to read. Best of all, you never have to worry about losing it, since it's built right in and powered off the Kindle's battery.
If I am reading a proper book, I just turn on the bedside lamp - I made sure to buy really low wattage bulbs so that they aren't too disturbing. But often times we read together in bed, so no one gets disturbed. My pet peeve is when my boyfriend reads emails on his Blackberry in bed. He shouldn't be working at 11pm! Turn that terrible device off!
I found eyeglasses at Winners, a discount store here. They are readers, with built in LED lights on the frames. You turn on the switches for the lights, and wherever you are looking is lit up. They work great, and don't disturb my husband, other than the fact that I look like a weirdo wearing them.
I read on my iPhone or iPad now. The white text on black background setting is great for reading in the dark and i no longer annoy my wife or keep the dog up all night. PLUS it's much easier to lie next to the device on the bed and then turn pages with a flick of my finger instead of holding the book open with one hand and using the other to turn the page. I can pretty much only fall asleep if I read at night so being able to do it in a more comfortable position is a huge benefit for me.
Headtorch with a red light! It doesn't wake up a slumbering person at all.
Forget the reading thing - where are the wallpaper and the quilt from?? *salivates*
According to the house tour, the wallpaper is from UK designer John Lewis and the quilt is from a local consignment shop.
My boyfriend is kind enough to wear an eye mask when I feel like reading later than he feels like being awake. I read an article somewhere about reading by candlelight, which I would try except that I fear falling asleep with a candle still burning and creating a fire hazard!
Smurfs and polar bear wallpaper, wrapped up in that divine quilt. I love it!
John Lewis is a UK department store, not a designer. They seem to carry Cole and Son wallpapers, though I can't find the elephant one at Cole and Son. Yet.
Actually, upon closer inspection, I think it's polar bears not elephants. But i can't find that one either.
OK, its oilcloth stapled to the walls, not wallpaper. I don't see it at the site anymore, but they have some other fantastic looking designs.
I just start reading, too. I'm almost always out after a few pages so it doesn't matter if the light is on or not.
iPad solved this problem for us.
My husband can sleep with light, so it's not really an issue. But when I read, I read from my laptop or kindle fire in the dark, with an installed software program/app that dims the light much more than factory settings allow. The app/program helps a LOT, and also reduces the issues w/ disrupting your own melatonin production b/c of staring at an electronic screen in the dark.
iPad works well for catching up on movies, tv shows, and reading in bed. Our only issue is if we both want to watch something or read at the same time :)
The one thing that isn't mentioned in all of this is how important it is to have proper lighting when you are reading.
After sitting at a computer screen all day, the last thing I want to be doing is straining my eyes trying to read, just to be considerate of my partner.
I have a directional light when I want to read in bed - mostly while he is still up.
Or if I find I can't sleep or want to read longer, I curl up on the couch with a throw...
Oh, man, my boyfriend and I have had issues negotiating this one. I absolutely must read before I sleep, and sometimes I'll go for a couple of hours, but the bedside lamp has to be off. I've settled on reading by candlelight (like one of those big jar candles), which usually works okay, and actually feels sort of cozy. Just be sure to blow it out before you fall asleep!
My fiance has resorted to wearing sleep masks when I read in bed. It does the trick.
Little lamps and eye masks don't work for my husband or me. Either we both stay awake with lights on in bed, or we both sleep with lights off in bed. If one of us can't sleep and the other one must sleep, then the one who can't sleep leaves the bedroom. When we're at a motel, I sit in the bathroom to read.
If my husband is tired I just go in the living rm & read until I'm ready to go 2 sleep.
