Now there are few things in this world I love more than a good reuse project. And if it's on a national scale... even better! After the Sun Chips compostable bag flop, it was time to restore faith in eco-friendly packaging and its rightfully important place in the eco-products chain. Here are some of the best "Post Consumer Waste" packaging and product advances we have seen to date.
From packaging to products, here are some highlights from the past 5 years that make us smile:
NEW Seventh Generation 96% Post-Consumer Bottles: This is a new industry standard! Seventh generation has evolved from sustainable laundry and dish products to a more full lifecycle brand. Their packaging is made from recycled milk jugs.
Green Toys: Adorable children's toys are easy to find, ones made in the USA from recycled milk jugs free of BPA or toxic paints shipped and sold in recycled packaging. Now that isn't so common. Green Toys' efforts are commendable, and their toys are pretty cute. Taking away the tech aspect, they promote a child's imagination while looking out for their health. These toys are also made from recycled milk jugs.
Preserve: Preserve products, formerly Recycline, are nothing new but are still eco-friendly and impressive. Made from plastic #5, the only kind approved for human consumption, they recycle your old yogurt containers and create colorful toothbrushes, tableware, and more.
New Leaf Paper: Now there are a great many paper companies jumping on the green bandwagon, whether out of realization that paper processing is quite a toxic process or to find new markets now the electronic filing has taken over most offices. NLP is one great company that uses tree-free fibers and PCW.
And my personal favorite allstar, none other than the...
US Postal Service (USPS): Despite the convenience of email, there are some things that are just better left written and received by snail mail. The US Post Office has made large strides to create sustainable mail options. The adhesives for stamps are biodegradable, and Priority Mail and Express Mail boxes and evelopes are certified Cradle to Cradle. Many are even designed to be reused several times, to help you really close the loop.
Happy PCW shopping! Any of your favorites you would like to add?
