Q: I recently found this vintage couch/love seat set listed in a local classified ad and really like them. Currently have a simple, brown, leather couch but am wanting to switch things up. Hoping for some input/advice... do you see potential in this vintage set?

The final picture above is my current couch and a bit of an idea of my current style, if this helps.

I personally love the vintage couch and think it would work well in your place.
I would have to think on a way to make them all work together, if you intend to keep your leather sofa, but the vintage set is to die for!! The shape is unique & wonderful and the color would be so easy to work with in the long term should your style change. I say go for it!
I really like the vintage set. You can make them look a bit more updated by removing the skirts if you're so inclined - I did this with a similar vintage set:
sofa
loveseat
I'd had the intention on changing out the legs. But it definitely modernized them a bit!
"I recently found this vintage couch/love seat set listed in a local classified ad and really like them." --- then why care about if we see the potential?
But to answer -- yes, I think its cute
Absolutely - So much more character and better quality than the red pleather!
Take your time deciding how you want to reupholster - but I could definitely see this in a nice medium/dark blue cotton velvet.
^^ Agree with the blue velvet upholstery comment above!
LOVE the set! And totally agree with reupholstery comment. A Parisian blue would be amazing. AND clean. :)
This was my submitted question, and I did end up purchasing them. We LOVE them -- drastically changed the look of the room in a great way. Fortunately, they are in amazing condition, barely any wear on the upholstery. However, I agree that reupholstering them in a blue velvet would be perfect! Maybe some day. Like you suggested, eveb1123 , I am looking into removing the skirts and replacing the legs with something similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B003YMI4IQ/ref=dp_image_text_z_0?ie=UTF8&n=1055398&s=home-garden
Anyone have experience with this? Suggestions?
Are you getting rid of the red leather couch? If so, send it my way, please! :)
I really like the vintage couches and I'm glad you're happy with them! What a find!
Yes, ditched the (genuine) leather sofa... Sorry! My sister is now enjoying it. Thanks everyone!
Lots of. Hubby and I have a similar sofa we bought at a thrift store and had it reupholstered a dark grey (skirt was removed and got tapered legs)

eveb1123, i am thinking about a diy to ditch the skirt on a sofa like yours. Exact legs -- they are almost part of the frame, right? Did you paint them -- the one's on my sofa are unfinished. Any hints, tips?
Another change I recommend if you decide to reupholster is to go with a single seat cushion on the loveseat (the three cushions on the couch look fine and are probably more practical). It will really update the look.
changing the love seat to a single cushion sounds like a great plan, thank you!
and here is a slightly better photo of the couches.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/67082683@N05/6107272853/in/photostream
I like the vintage love seat. I wouldn't want to keep both the couch and love seat as I don't like matchy matchy stuff and normally you don't seem homes with matching love seat and couch on AT. What about spray painting the love seat. There was a post on AT of someone who did that and it looked like leather afterwards.
Oh did you see the recent post of here where someone reupholstered their vintage couch in black and had white trim put on it. They also had the skirt removed to modernize it.
If the set is free or cheap, I'd say go for the vintage and just cut off the skirts. Depending on the legs, I'd switch them out or leave them.
Derp, I see you already did/are doing exactly what I suggested. I should read the former comments before I comment.
I like those legs you picked! And I disagree with the re-upholstery suggestions, I don't think it's necessary. If you DO choose to do reupholster, the blue is a nice suggestion, but I don't know why people always ASSUME you will reupholster couches like those. Just a nice cleaning should suffice if you don't want to shell out the beaucoup bucks for fabric AND labor.
I was thinking a blue colour too - peacock or teals even. I actually like the fabric on it, but am not sure about how it will look with the other sofa you have (one may make the other look like a plain stepsister).
@codelette: that is one fine redo of the sofa. Inspires me.
I'd like to see a modern narrow taper or a straight style leg with little to no ornament. But skirtless definitely. The fabric looks excellent as is, but if you have the pocketbook for it, why not aubergine or eggplant linen?
I see you already bought the couches, but I just wanted to say that I am glad you did. They look amazing!
I have a vintage couch I have been thinking about taking the skirt off of, and after seeing the befores and afters people have posted here, I am going to go do it. Right now.
Go for it! Are you thinking reupholstery too? Could be expensive, but it looks good as-is so you wouldn't have too. Either way, it would be worth it. I know I'm jealous :)
@eveb1123 Hey I just looked at your photos and why don't you submit your pictures for an AT house tour. Your house looks great and I really like how you incorporated the vintage sofa and love seat.
Are they comfortable? If you're used to that big cushy modern red leather sofa, you might want to consider that as cute as this set is, it might not be so comfortable, especially for taller people.
I have a loveseat with a similar shape to these, and my one piece of advice I can give is find someone who is REALLY good with upholstery. The guy who did mine did a great job, but he said he'd never do it again because all the buttons were such a pain in the butt!
Re-upholstering one day would be exciting for sure. Until that day, those couches are fabulous as they are. I think a mix of modern and unexpected cushions would be fun. :) Great find!
Great Find... if you can't reupholster, just add some colorful cushions and you are set! Love the vintage couch.... adorable...
