Do you recognize this cart? Sure you do, it's the FLYTTA from IKEA. It's a good size for just under $160, but this one is different. It's amazing what a layer of powder coating will do to make something special!
We stopped in over at Piewacket where this basic IKEA cart has had a brand new paint job. Well powder coat job that is. The traditional stainless steel is given this soft vintage green treatment that is straight up perfect.
It might be that it resides in a Southern home by a photographer with a vintage flair, but it doesn't much matter if this piece would hold it's own anywhere in the country. It's a great reminder that a little personalization can go a long way and that doesn't always have to mean spray paint. Although this option can be pricier, it will last much longer and take the rough and tumble nature of everyday life. You can check out more on the powder coating process over at Piewacket.

This is a fantastic idea.
gorgeous. love the color.
What is powder coat?
This is beautiful!
Love the cart and GREAT idea! I love powder coat finishes and it never occurred to me that there would be shops out there where you could just go have something done.
$160 PLUS $250 for the powder coat.
It's looks great, but that's an expensive cart.
looks great, costs too much. how about a $6 can of krylon?
So expensive. I have a big letter e that I bought at a salvage place, and it's fire engine red. Which worked for me for a while, but it doesn't really anymore, and I want to have it powder coated. But man, so expensive. The cart looks good, though.
Powder coating is a dry powder that you spray on with a gun that is heated up to form a sort of paint skin.
I do it on car parts quite a bit.
I like the decal on the microwave so cute
I love the color, and I love the durability of powder coat. But I don't love the cost, especially when done on an Ikea cart that doesn't have welds meant to last for a long life. I think I'll stick with a $10 vintage Cosco kitchen cart and a can of spray paint.
that coffee machine is the one from the holiday giveaway...so in love <3
Thanks for the comments and I hear y'all on the cost. For me it was worth it. For such a utilitarian piece, I wanted the durability and in my small kitchen, it is a big focal point. You could easily cut the cost by finding a cart at a yard sale, or on Craig's List.
p.s. I am in the South but now So. Cal, just moved last month! I had this done at Sundial in Sun Valley, near Burbank.
I have picked up this cart 3 times on craigslist (reselling as needed; at one point I had two, and then one, and then two, and then one) and each time it cost me $50-60. Well, ppl may ask for more, but in my area you can get it for $50 (although sometimes random rails will go missing.... >.>)
... still, $250 for powdercoating is a bit much. Although I was interested in getting something powdercoated before, since I found a CL listing for a shop in my area.
I do like this a lot, especially since the stainless starts looking not-entirely-flawless after a while. I don't think BKF will fix it, either.
Really, really cute. My mom had an old outdoor table powder coated many years ago, and it's held up forever, through many moves. Well worth it for something you want to have around for a while.
I agree with suzee. Beautiful, and totally worth it for something you're going to have for a long time. Ikea furniture can last a long time if you're careful to put it together correctly (and screw all the screws super tight). Plus the powdercoat will probably extend its life.
Powdercoating is awesome and when I lived in L.A. I did it to a bunch of different things. But where I live now, even tho there are powder coating places, they give me the blank stare or tell me it can't be done. It's mostly an industrial process so unless you meet up with a creative shop or are in an area where that kind of thing is in demand, good luck finding someone to do it on random household goods.
I'm moving into a place with a giant kitchen but almost NO counter space. How I hadn't thought of getting a cart is baffling me.
where can i find that coffee maker??
I got it on Amazon, there is a link on the original post.
I have 4 Russell Woodard Sculptura chairs I've been wanting to have stripped and powder coated, but I cant find any recommendations for someone in Chicago to do the job for me. Any recommendations?
There are vintage rolling carts over on eBay for about $40. Powder coating one of those in the color of your choice would save you about $120 and be more environmentally responsible since you are saving an existing item from the dump. Assuming you choose an environmentally responsible paint shop...
here is the coffee maker:
