When we stumbled upon this kid-friendly gadget that took second place in this year's Greener Gadgets competition, we just knew we had to share. Designed to help teach kids a lesson about conservation and energy costs, the Power Hog Piggy Bank regulates energy use by requiring coin deposits to keep power flowing to the connected device...
We think this little energy friendly pig would be a cute and easy way to teach kids about energy costs and the importance of turning devices off when they are not in use. The Power Hog Piggy Bank is easy to use- just plug the curly green tail into an outlet, an electronic device into the snout, and drop in a coin to get the power flowing. When the meter starts to run low. a dollar sign on the side glows red as a warning before the pig shuts down the connected device.
Obviously older kids would quickly figure out how to bypass the pig, but we think the Power Hog would work with the younger set, and could help spark a family conversation about energy costs and conservation. No word yet on whether the Power Hog Piggy Bank will make it into production, though we hope its high showing in the Greener Gadgets competiton is a positive sign.
