Flipping through the June 2011 issue of Elle Decor yesterday I came across the most fantastic kitchen in a Victorian townhouse in Gramercy Park. But what really caught my eye was the kitchen's beautiful rug. As I looked up the source information I was surprised to find that this rug is just as practical as it is pretty.
Not only is it durable, water resistant and easy to clean, it was designed by high-end textile artist Liora Manne. And it is reasonably priced for a designer rug (the 5x8 version of the "Souzani Diamonds" sells for $500).
Liora Manne's rugs are truly one of a kind. They feel like wool felt but are actually made with acrylic and polyester fibers. They are hand-made but also machine processed using cutting edge technology.
My favorites remind me both of Moroccan tiles and the colors and symmetry one may encounter in a microbiology textbook. Like the technique she uses to create her rugs, their designs are a lovely blend of natural and modern.
Using Lamontage, a special process Manne herself developed, fibers are intricately cut, blended and layered by hand. Then a needle loom mechanically interlocks these loose fibers into a nonwoven fabric that resembles felt. According to her website, the rugs are then coated with "an EPA approved SmartSilver™ antimicrobial finish, which permanently embeds microscopic silver particles in the rug." This coating helps prevent deterioration, odor and mildew, making the rugs an ideal choice for high-traffic and high-moisture areas like kitchens and patios.
I think I have found my new kitchen rug!

Shaw's Original Fir...
I wandered into a Liora Manne showroom somewhere in NY and bought a wonderful bag, so followed the link to her website. Wow, she is a powerhouse of talent and accomplishment.
never mind the rug, i want that kitchen!
A $500 rug is not affordable when I spill spaghetti sauce on it!
Go ahead and spill the spaghetti sauce: Because they're indoor-outdoor rugs made of acrylic & polyester, you can just hose them off.
I need to talk my girlfriend into buying these instead of those stupid, impractical oriental rugs that get damaged so easily and can't be cleaned.
At first glance I thought they were going to be canvas painted rugs...
OK rugs (not my personal taste), but about the "SmartSilver" stuff ----nano silver is not such a great idea. go ahead, look it up. basically, we know as much about the toxicological properties of nano silver as we did in 1945 about asbestos. and every indication shows we're in for some pretty bad long term effects from this never-tested new product.

I want more pictures of that kitchen! Putting that in my folder for ideas. Beautiful!
Mine just arrived today.. I fell in love with it when I saw it in the Elle Decore June Issue.. I got the runner size 24x8.. and of all the places I found it on the Home shopping network for a pretty good price. There's more blue then red in this cut but it looks beautiful..Just hope it's not toxic Like the post above says
