I am really picky about my travel mug for morning commutes &mdash it must keep the beverage hot (or cold depending on the season) during an hour commute and then at least for an hour or two after arriving at the office. But just as important it must not spill, not even a dribble! Most mugs in my experience don't meet these requirements, nor are many mugs made with environmentally friendly materials. So when I stumbled upon Klean Kanteen's new Wide Insulated double wall stainless steel travel container, I wondered, could this possibly be the travel mug of my dreams?
I filled the insulated container with hot coffee and tested it during my morning commute, which consists of 20 minutes of walking outside (in the Chicago winter) and 25 minutes on the train.
Performance: The Klean Kanteen Wide Insulated mug surpassed my expectations by staying not just warm, but hot for hours. The mug was filled at 7:30, and by the time I arrived to the office at 8:30 it was still piping hot. An hour later, still hot, and by 1:00 it was still warm and not just room temperature warm but drinkable warm. This was just amazing. And to solve the spillage issue, the mug comes with two cap options: stainless steel loop cap and a cafe cap. If you buy both (they offer a combo pack) you can use the loop cap to keep the bottle leakproof while you're on-the-go, and then switch to the cafe cap when you're ready to drink! I really can't be happier, the fact that it stayed hot during 16-degree snowy weather was really shocking, the optional lids are a huge bonus and the BPA free stainless steel container just seals the deal. The mug could also easily be used to store warm foods and hot soup, as well as other cold beverages. If you've been searching for the ultimate travel mug, look no further and go get the Klean Kanteen Wide Insulated.

I've been using the OXO Good Grips Stainless steel travel mug. It's truly spill free and keeps my coffee hot for hours as well, but it doesn't need an accessory top to drink from it easily. Just press the button on the cap to unseal and once more to reseal (to illustrate how much I trust it now, I bring it around in my camera bag right next to my new DSLR... full). I just wish it came in a larger size.
It can be found here
Ditto FoodiEconomy. I need to transition from sealed to unsealed while I'm riding the subway and need to be mobile and then sipping blissfully without changing lids.
foodieconomy -- Actually the OXO travel mug has been my standby for the last several years as it was the only one I'd found that didn't spill. I expected the Klean Kanteen to perform similarly, but it was way better in terms of keeping my coffee hot. The OXO kept my coffee warm by the time I got my office, but the Klean Kanteen kept it piping hot for hours after getting work. Soo much better.
Hmm...wonder if more of that Chinese radioactive steel made it into this product?
Cancer isn't just for cheese graters anymore.
"The Chinese-made grater was laced with the isotope Cobalt-60, and was giving off the equivalent to a chest X-ray every 36 hours." D:
If my OXO steel mug ever kicks, I'll keep the KK one in mind. Maybe they'll come up with their own leak-proof drink lid by that time.
I used an OXO travel mug for a few years, but I always felt like the lid was never getting properly cleaned. So I've switched over the classic Thermos Nissan travel mug. The lid is not perfectly leak proof, but it is sufficient for a regular drive. And the lid can be opened and closed with one hand and thoroughly cleaned. The Nissan mug also keeps drinks much hotter than my OXO, especially if I remember to preheat the container. And the whole thing fits into my car's drink holder. I'm very happy with it.
This is a horrible travel cup. The need for a second lid is silly because there are great mugs that are leak proof without. BUT, what really makes it bad is that you can't seem to clean between the moving parts on the top. Which means there is a layer of whatever in there at all time. Gross.
