My sister is a Pampered Chef director so naturally my kitchen is full of PC stuff and I LOVE THEM! I'm sure these are great products, but I cringe at the thought of getting anything but Pampered Chef.
To the measuring cups and spoons, add the odd-sized versions.
Microplane graters- cheese, nutmegs, citrus and so on.
a stick blender- I loved our original so much, we wore it out and replaced it.
I'm considering a mandoline.
If you will live in an apple or potato area, get the simple hand powered peeler/corer/slicer for speedy prep. Pies, sauce, and so on are quickly made.
For a baker: pie dish, pie weights, crust shield, pie server, possibly the pastry cloth and rolling pin.
A chef friend and food safety nut always stressed to buy kitchen items with as few seams as possible in order to keep things clean and make them last as long as possible. Stainless items are particularly good for this. I try to follow his rule whenever possible, and it hasn't failed me yet. the stuff that always breaks has plastic handles or weird rivets.
OXO makes some similar stainless locking tongs which are probably a bit cheaper and I can definitely recommend.
You can actually buy all of the OXO gadgets at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. And if you have a coupon it's going to be cheaper - if you don't, you can sign up for them or ask them politely to take care of you. Their return policy is a lot more flexible than other places.
I love getting stainless steel for everything but the salad spinner. I had a plastic one that dates back all the way to the 70's, and had to replace it due to its huge size (and my small kitchen) with a 2 euros smaller version. It's totally inexpensive, doesn't come in contact with heat (apparently heated plastic can emit nasty chemicals, but not cold, hard plastic), and gets the job done.
I'd add a stainless steel kettle. Couldn't live without mine !
I still keep a kettle for emergencies, but I converted to one of the electric water boilers for speed and convenience. Closed system when on, so water doesn't evaporate. Cleaning is easy. You boil a set amount of white vinegar and then boil some plain water after.
I chose a Zojirushi.
