I did it in a bedroom, and LOVED it. Yes, hard to keep clean, but worth it. Here's a (slightly blurry) picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/susanliedke/5346452241/in/photostream
White always looks so nice and fresh in photos, but daily maintenance is time consuming and so hard to keep clean.
I'M NOT A FAN OF PAINTING WOOD FLOORS UNLESS THEY ARE BEYOND REPAIR BUT I MUST ADMIT, THESE ROOMS (EXCEPT THE PINK ROOM) LOOK DREAMY.
I bought a house with parquet flooring throughout - the ugly kind - this past September. They wanted way too much money to refinish the floor so I painted the bedroom level high gloss white. I Googled tonnes to find the best paint to use and came back with Sherwin Williams floor and porch paint in high gloss. I painted all the walls white too, but in each bedroom did a colour theme with one wall painted that colour (I am Mediterranean blue, my one daughter pickle green, the other fuchsia and the spare room yellow.). Each room looks fantastic (if I do say so myself) and since I used high gloss, I don't find the floors hard at all to clean - just the opposite - an electro-static broom picks up everything as I fly by with it. Love love love and my friend did so much, she copied me.
p.s. .... don't forget two coats of high-adhesion primer first - all latex paint and took 5-7 days to cure to move in the furniture. Did not put rugs down for another month and padded every furniture foot with those fuzzy pad things.
I love this look and think that if I had no kids or Husband it would be great.
Oh WALLFLOWERPOWER - that's a terrible DIY tale of woe. I'm sorry that happend but you've made lemons out of lemonade! I love the look of a white painted floor. And you're in good company with painted white floors - perhas Elle Decor will be knocking on your door soon.
I'd LOVE to have white floor...as I love Swedish decor but I am afraid it will be troublesome when I am ready to sell.
These rooms are all so gorgeous!!!
Already bought the paint I need to do this to my kitchen floors. Yup. Kitchen. In a house with five kids and a dog. Possibly a stupid idea, but I figured we'd give this a try before shelling out a bunch of cash for tile, and having to make a huge commitment. The existing floors are fir (not a hardwood), and do not match the oak in the rest of the house so I don't consider refinishing them to be worth the money and effort.
LOVE these rooms. Now thinking where I can paint a white floor in my house!
Every time I see white painted floorboards (which is very different from the tounge and groove flooring most Americans have) I'm reminded of how much I miss Changing Rooms.
Hi!
Has anyone painted parquet floors white? Pics?
I LOVE the look of white plank wood floors but don't know how nice it would translate to parquet! Underneath carpet, in my teeny tiny bedroom, I have old parquet which I would love to "expose"!
YJAARI - see my post above - parquet is exactly what I painted and they turned out great - just use high adhesion primer (2 coats) and 2 coats of high gloss floor and porch paint and whalla - beautiful white floors and easy to clean, unless you are of the "wear your shoes in the house" set ... I even used latex. I will see if I can find a pic to post for you.
well, I'm doing it. I'm gonna have white floors in every dark room of my dark house. I'm probably not going to paint what's here b/c it's all in terrible shape. I'm probably going to go with new pickled wood or linoleum. white floors don't *get* dirty faster, dirt just shows quicker. no doubt my floors are slightly dirty all the time. big deal, so are everyone else's. I just can't get my panties in a twist about something as trivial as not having immaculate floors. I liked Melissa McCarthy's answer to a question about her weight: she tries to be healthy but she is too busy living her life to obsess over her weight or solely focus on it. same thing with the perfectly clean floor.
We recently painted the parquet floors of our kitchen and living room white and have been extremely happy with the results. The room went from feeling dark and yellow to clean, crisp and bright, and the cost was ultimately much lower than putting in new wood floors or refinishing. The floors do show dirt more a little more quickly but it's easy to wipe away.
The toughest part of the process was figuring out what type of paint to use. Oil paint was recommended for its durability and gloss, but I was hesitant given its toxicity (especially since I was pregnant at the time) and because it tends to yellow. Latex is less toxic but not nearly as durable. After doing a lot of online research and speaking to technicians at Benjamin Moore and some local paint suppliers, I decided to use a Benjamin Moore waterborne epoxy, which is both durable (it's often used for garage floors and the like) and relatively safe compared to oil. The painting process involved cleaning the floor with a special Benjamin Moore de-greaser, doing a light sanding and then applying 2 coats of the epoxy, which has two parts that have to be mixed and used within a certain time frame. The result is a glossy, pure white finish that so far has proven to be extremely durable. I was out of the house for the actual painting but my husband reported that fumes/odors were practically non-existent.
Photos of the painting process and end result can be found on the blog of Daniel Friedman, the designer who gave us the idea to paint the floors white in the first place:

Also, for anyone who wants to do this and lives in the New York area, the painter we used was Roy Hing at 917-572-5344. He did a terrific job for a reasonable price.
Ive been wanting to paint my floors white and I was wondering if you could tell me how the epoxy has held up on the wood floors. I was told it could crack easily so I was hoping you could shed some light on the subject. Thanks!
