My kids like a very wide array of music, but not your typical nursery rhymes. In an effort to cultivate this musical curiosity I searched for different types of children's music. I found a book one day, called "Un dimanche à Kyoto" ("Sunday in Kyoto", the English version, which has Patrick Watson interpreting a few songs, hello!). It was accompanied by a CD on which very prominent local artists were featured interpreting Gilles Vigneault's music (Gilles Vigneault being one of the biggest icon, and most amazing songwriter and poet from Québec).
The Secret Mountain ("La Montagne Secrète") company was created in Québec about 12 years ago, when the founder, Roland Stringer, then a young father, spotted an old forgotten vinyl in a garage sale that was essentially nursery rhymes and stories by above-mentioned prominent Master, Gilles Vigneault. Stringer went on to produce a rendition of this vinyl with big names interpreting the titles. The success was instant and it triggered the need for the team at Secret Mountain to provide quality books-CDs, DVDs, as well as a few really nice iPad apps.
They offer a view of different cultures through amazing illustrations and story telling, world lullabies sung in their original languages, amazing artists, and great collections of instruments. If I could buy all their products, I actually would!
